It's feeling a bit chilly today isn't it? Looking forward to the colder months it is worth considering the insulation value of green roofs: While green roofs do not perform like standard insulation, energy savings have been shown to amount to 2.5kWh/m2/yr. Green roofs can also contribute to Building Standards efficiency requirements. Now 2.5kWh is not a huge amount but multiply that figure to the scale of a green roof it can add up to alot of energy saving! Let's put it into context 😀 What does 2.5kWh's power? Lighting: A typical LED bulb (10 watts) running for approximately 250 hours, which is about 41 minutes per day for a year. Small Electronics: A smartphone charger consumes about 5 watts. 2.5 kWh could power the charger for about 500 hours. If it takes about 2 hours to charge a phone, that's enough energy for approximately 250 full charges. Laptops: A laptop consuming 50 watts could run for about 50 hours on 2.5 kWh. If you use the laptop for 2 hours a day, this would last about 25 days. Cooking: A microwave oven typically uses about 1 kW of power. 2.5 kWh could run a microwave for 2.5 hours. If you use the microwave for 10 minutes a day, this would last for about 15 days. Refrigeration: A small, energy-efficient refrigerator might use around 150 kWh per year. 2.5 kWh would power such a refrigerator for about 6 days. You get the picture??
