4,200km of resilience & purpose—retracing history’s salt line to inspire equity, sustainability & collective action.

About us

Are you ready for a real life horror story that you've probably never heard of? The East India Company was established in 1600, and one of the earliest shareholder value companies. Many of you know it became the largest corporation in the world and established two principle taxes in India - land and salt. To sanction the Salt Tax, an Inland Customs line was established. Excluding a few stone walls where ground conditions constrained planting, the 2,504-mile-long Hedge was composed entirely of living vegetation at its peak from 1869 to 1879. From 1876 to 1878 a famine engulfed India - probably the worst in Indian history. Between six and ten million people starved to death as a consequence of drought, bad harvest, and poor British food policies like the salt tax. In 1879, the Customs Line was abandoned. Just a few years later, it had vanished. And then it completely disappeared from History. Rediscovered by Roy Moxham in 1995 from reading an account of a British Officer in India in the 19th Century, this piece of history was all but erased from the history books. His book, released in 2000, which I read in 2014 is the only real piece of research and data on it. The Inland Customs Line is a symbol of taking resources without considering the people it is most acutely affecting. It’s a symbol of consuming and taking more than we need, and that when we do, we compromise the ability of future generations to meet their needs. My running journey in Autumn 2025 will take me across the 4030km of Inland Customs Line in India, attempting to traverse it at the equivalent of a marathon a day, over around three months. No matter who we are, we can do hard things. No matter where we are in our journey we can make a difference. And to never forget that we don’t have to do everything, but we have to do something. If you want to follow along, I’ll be updating on Instagram and LinkedIn @projectsaltrun

  • 💭 What’s your wildest dream? 💭 I’ll share mine if you share yours… Over a decade ago, I stumbled upon a book by Roy Moxham about the Great Hedge of India—a 4,200km customs line built to enforce a salt tax that caused unimaginable suffering. That story stuck with me, sparking a dream that felt as impossible as it was audacious. When my dad passed away, I felt a deep desire to connect with his roots in Calcutta, the city where he grew up. That’s when my wild dream began to take shape: to retrace the Great Hedge all the way to his childhood home, reconnecting with both history and heritage. Here’s the thing: I wasn’t a runner. For most of my life, I didn’t even think of myself as particularly athletic. But I’ve come to realise that wild dreams aren’t about being “ready” or having it all figured out. They’re about daring to begin, even when it feels impossible. This dream has become Project Salt Run: my attempt to run 100 marathons in 100 days, covering 4,200km across India, all while raising £1 million for those most affected by climate change. Am I ready? Not really. Will it be easy? Absolutely not. But I’ve realised one thing: if not now, when? Now, I want to ask you: What’s your wildest dream? 👉 Share your dream in the comments below. It doesn’t matter how big or small it is, or how impossible it might seem. What matters is taking that first step—saying it out loud and believing in the possibility of what if. Because when we dare to dream, we discover what’s truly possible. So, I’ll ask again: What’s your wildest dream? I can’t wait to hear your stories. 🌍❤️ #WhatsYourWildestDream #ProjectSaltRun #DareToDream #Resilience #IfNotNowWhen #runindia 👩🏻💻Hannah Cox Nina Davies Becca Marsh (FRGS) Natalie Smith Dan Beaumont Joel Chevaillier (FRGS) givestar 1% for the Planet The Long Run Club The Better Business Network betternotstop

Helping businesses and live events increase their positive impact on people and planet. I'm also obsessed with a hedge in India. Project Salt Run – 100 Marathons to raise £1M for the planet

242 Days to go. For ten years, I’ve been obsessed with the idea of traveling the length of a hedge—the old inland customs line built by the East India Company to control trade, restrict movement, and exploit people. I never really knew why. Then last year, it all clicked. Since 2021 I have supported Better Business Act fighting to change the law, is a direct challenge to the system the East India Company created—the same system that built corporate monopolies, fueled climate destruction, and let corrupt governments put profit over people. Climate action isn’t just about carbon—it’s about toppling the structures that keep the world broken. As I’ve searched for my own cultural identity, I’ve looked to my Dad's birthplace, India to understand where I come from. Maybe it’s not just a cause—it’s personal. Maybe my exact history is what led me here. If I hadn’t come back to the UK eight years ago—if I’d followed my original plan to stay in India, pursue working in film, visit a lost Jewish tribe, and travel the hedge—I never would have met Dan in the Czech Republic, or Becca and Joel at the Adventure Travel Film Festival. Last Year I saw Dan in the background of a viral Instagram reel, which meant I met Nat and Alex through his Ultra Challenge, and took that dinner invitation with Enviral where I met Nina If Rebecca had never joined The Better Business Network, maybe REACTION COLLECTIVE wouldn’t have come to the Better Business Summit, and Michael wouldn’t have become the final piece to our jigsaw puzzle. Everything is connected. Every decision, every person, every unexpected turn—it’s all led to this moment. I’m running—because this is about momentum, urgency, and breaking barriers. We can’t afford to stand still. Project Salt Run isn’t just me—it’s a whole team making this happen. And the truth is, we have no idea how we’re funding this yet. We’re actively looking for businesses and individuals to help us make it happen. Because this isn’t just a run—it’s a mission to raise £1 million for 1% for the Planet and support real climate action. I’ve spent the last five years unknowingly working towards this, empowering businesses to take real action against the capitalist shit show we’re all stuck in (and Trump, let’s be real). And this run—it’s not just about me. It’s about showing that we can do something to change the world. We’re all connected. Hope is not lost. The system is broken, but that doesn’t mean we have to accept it. By taking on something massive, we want to prove that action—real, bold, ambitious action—is possible. Everything I’ve ever done has led to this moment—and honestly? I’m absolutely terrified. But that’s exactly why I have to do it. If this resonates with you—if you want to be part of something big—let’s talk. #ProjectSaltRun #ClimateAction #1PercentForThePlanet #RunningForChange #ReclaimTheFuture #BetterBusinessNetwork #HopeIsNotLost

  • ✨ What’s your wildest dream? ✨ I've been chasing something that feels both impossible and deeply personal. Project Salt Run is my attempt to run 100 marathons in 100 days across India—retracing the Great Hedge of India and raising £1 million for those most affected by climate change. 🌍 This dream was sparked over a decade ago by a book and reignited by a longing to connect with my dad's roots in Calcutta. It’s terrifying, exhilarating, and the biggest challenge I’ve ever taken on. The truth is, I wasn’t “ready” when I began this journey. I wasn’t even a runner. But I’ve learned that dreams aren’t about perfection—they’re about beginning, even when it feels impossible. 👉 Now I want to hear from you. What’s your wildest dream? Share it below, no matter how big or small, realistic or audacious. Why? Because saying it out loud is the first step toward making it real. 💭 #WildestDreams #ProjectSaltRun #ClimateAction #DareToDream #bbs25

Connecting people, nature and running for a healthy and sustainable future. Running and health coach at Perpetual Motion. Brand and community builder. Co-founder The Green Runners and Into The Wilds.

This is 👩🏻💻Hannah Cox. She is not an athlete. She is not a seasoned ultra runner. She is an ordinary, everyday runner embarking on an extraordinary challenge. And she asked me to be her coach 🫢 We have just under a year to train for a 4000km run across India. 100 marathons in a 100 days, in heat, humidity, altitude, unknown territory and challenging terrains. This is a full on project for a newbie run coach and I’m shit scared of letting her down. But Hannah has been brave enough to take this on and share her vulnerability so I feel it is only right I share mine. And the truth is that what Hannah lacks in running experience she more than makes up for in mindset and I am so lucky to be working with her. ⭐ Hannah is a doer. She has a lot to say but always backs it up with action. When faced with “You can’t” or “Why” Hannah’s response is always “I can”, “Why not”, and “If I can, who else can?” 💪 Hannah knows how to defy self limiting beliefs. She is a natural born problem solver who keeps showing up when things get tough. ⚡ Hannah is magnetic. She trusts in people, gives out positive energy and attracts good people in return. 👊 And Hannah has a clear purpose. This run traces the route of an old Inland Customs Line, finishing at her Dad’s home in Calcutta. It was built in 1869 to enforce a salt tax. Within seven years, a famine engulfed India and over 6 million people starved to death due to poor British food policies like this. Project Salt Run is a symbol of consuming and taking more than we need, and that when we do, we compromise the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Her goal is to raise a huge £1,000,000 for communities impacted by climate change. The reality is Hannah has been building her whole life for this challenge. She may be an ordinary runner but she is also an extraordinary person. A lighting bolt of a human who will put in the hard work and bring together an incredible team Dan Beaumont, Becca Marsh (FRGS) Joel, 1% for the Planet. Together we will make sure she can finish what she has started. I am so chuffed to be part of this project. It ticks every box that we are passionate about at Perpetual Motion Coaching and The Green Runners and so much more. So I may be new to run coaching but I am not new to rising to a challenge. We are well on our way with the training and I know the most powerful thing I can do is help Hannah harness all her knowledge, skills and resources to get the very best out of herself and the team. I believe in her and believe we are stronger together. You can follow our journey Project Salt Run #teamwork #coaching #mindset #running #impact #vulnerability

Throwback to last week, when The Better Business Network hosting TWO Run Clubs at Blue Earth Summit to promote Project Salt Run. Being able to incorporate this challenge into my work is something I really appreciate - Milo Fletcher, James Dady and Laura Matz have all helped me host run clubs over the last few months and it's been so much fun to enjoy getting fit together. Massive thanks to Merrell for letting us try out their Trail Shoes on the run... and to The Long Run Club for gifting me a T -Shirt that makes me feel like a Marvel Superhero! After speaking today with my running coach, Nina Davies I've got a nice slow week of recovery and strength training coming up. Next race will be adidas Terrex Kendal Mountain Events Festival 10K Trail Run in November. #projectsaltrun #blueearthsummit

  • ‘Everything is temporary’ Six months on. On Saturday I ran an ultramarathon. Six months after telling my friend Dan Beaumont I was a runner. I forgot to get a proper finishers photo (this is Milo Fletcher and I queueing for food afterwards!) but you can see the medal right? 😂 If you read my betternotstop newsletter you’ll know, the last 18 months have shown me everything can change. Surrounding yourself with people that believe in you is so important. And that once you start believing in yourself absolute madness can happen. Maybe I can really run 100 marathons in 100 days? P.S Mark Shayler led a transformative workshop for me at GOODFEST CIC two weeks ago and he will be at Blue Earth Summit this week. If you are there I encourage you to get along to it 💫💫💫
