Earlier this week, some of the Pulse team have been helping with the clearing and maintenance of the ‘Tiny Forest’ at The City of Leicester College, one of 6 planted in Leicester City, funded by the Local Authority Treescapes Fund 2023. Each of these Tiny Forests includes an external classroom area with benches to encourage students to learn in a natural environment. 🌳 Tiny Forests are based upon the work of Japanese botanist Dr Akira Miyawaki, who in the 1970s, pioneered a method of planting young native tree species close together to quickly regenerate forests on degraded land. The idea is that these will all grow, and encourage each other to grow very quickly, providing a multi-canopy forest. The benefits are numerous, not just tree capturing carbon, but also providing rich environments for native species of insect and bird alike – and in turn, worms and other ground-dwellers creating healthy soil to help capture and store even more carbon.  It’s a great way to build biodiversity up in smaller urban areas. 🌲🐞🕊️🐝🪱🪲 Across Europe there are 281 Tiny Forests and at the City of Leicester College Forest alone there are 600 trees, made up of 21 different species! As with many spaces, since Covid, priorities for a lot of premises and facilities/estates managers have been on core service & high traffic areas. As a consequence, Pulse have helped The City of Leicester College along with our industry colleagues from maber team, BWB Consulting Ltd and Leicester City Council's Sustainable Schools Team, to clear weeds, tidy the Tiny Forest area, repair allotment beds, and cut back grasses and remove rubbish. It was a hugely fulfilling day and we all thoroughly enjoyed supporting the local community in helping to breathe a bit more life into this fantastic initiative!
