Racing towards answers through collaboration. In September, Race Against Dementia Fellows Dr Karissa Barthelson and Dr. Jake Brooks took their research to the next level at Diamond Light Source - one of the world’s most advanced scientific facilities. Karissa and Jake have teamed up to study iron buildup in the brain, focusing on Sanfilippo syndrome - a type of childhood dementia. Tracking the invisible dementia trigger in air pollution 🧠 Team RAPID is based at The Francis Crick Institute (UCL). In the press 🗞️ Race Against Dementia & Rosetrees have teamed up to launch a ground-breaking £4.2M programme aimed at driving out dementia. 🏎 These teams will accelerate the search for preventions and cures for dementia, focusing on fresh ideas and disruptive approaches. One of the six teams supported by this initiative is a collaborative effort between Professor Gandhi and Professor Swanton (The Francis Crick Institute UCL). Vascular dementia represents up to 20% of dementia cases worldwide, yet it is often overlooked in research and treatment development. Team Vascular at the University of Edinburgh have been awarded a major grant to lead the charge against this devastating condition. In both motorsport and research, teams thrive on precision, speed and collaboration. Team Vascular are using these principles to push boundaries, pilot new drugs, and drive innovation in the race against small vessel disease - a leading cause of strokes and cognitive decline. In support of Race Against Dementia we were thrilled to host the annual JCMG Charity Golf Day at The Dukes Course, St Andrews, followed by a Sports Dinner at the Old Course Hotel. The evening event featured legendary guests including Gordon Strachan OBE, Rory Lawson, Mark Stewart, Dougie Donnelly & Mark Beaumont BEM. Tim Harvey led an entertaining Q&A session, with members of Clarkie’s Clan—Ellie Gower, Natasha Philips & Kirsty Muir—joining in as well.
