Last Saturday’s ‘In & Around the Meadows’ event at Callander was a great success - we hope everyone enjoyed the spooky festivities and the freshly squeezed apple juice. We shared our early design options for Station Road carpark and The Meadows. The proposals are centred around resilient, biodiverse, welcoming and playful space for locals and visitors. Mackenzie Construction is proud to be involved in the Making Places project, a £4m improvement project transforming the landscape of Woodside. The area will see improved streets, play areas, green spaces and travel paths 🌳 We were delighted to attend the Woodside Making Places Open Day last Thursday, the 17th of October at the Cedar Community Hub. There were a number of games and activities for the kids to enjoy, we held a basketball challenge for them in the new basketball court, they were able to play in the new park and there were a number of different bikes and trikes for them to try out. For the adults, there was a sign up for the new bike and mobility scooter storage, as well as a workshop run on herbs and other edible plants. We had a brilliant time and enjoyed meeting with the project architects Nathan Wilson and Rosie Bookless.

Thank you to Queens Cross Housing Association for holding a lively event to launch the extensive new play areas at Woodside (now open for use!) Embedded between the housing is a vibrant range of natural play, social swings, climbing rocks, slides and much more… The event featured basketball challenges, bikes & trikes and opportunities to sign up for spaces in the new bicycle and mobility scooter stores. We really enjoyed chatting with residents and promoted use of the new herb planters through smell & taste tests and providing recipe inspiration. https://lnkd.in/eB9qJ2FJ The feedback from the community has been incredible with residents describing how the new green spaces are already enriching their daily lives. The volcanic plug of Arthur’s Seat may feel timeless, but Holyrood Park is sensitive to the pressures of both the climate crisis and the volume of visitors utilising the unique green space. https://lnkd.in/dtP3VjyP Discover our landscape and conservation management plan, part of the launch of Holyrood Park Strategic Plan by Historic Environment Scotland. Utilising GIS, we have created an interactive Story Map to act as an accessible resource for those seeking to understand Holyrood Park’s rich natural and cultural history and how this can inform the park’s future. The plan has been a collaborative effort involving Rathmell Archaeology Limited, Echoes Ecology Ltd and Civic Engineers working closely with HES and NatureScot to ensure it integrates landscape, archaeological, ecological and climate resilient proposals for future conservation management of Holyrood Park.

It is a delight to hear such positive feedback from the people who matter most! This survey, conducted on behalf of Southside Housing Association 🏡, highlights the innumerable benefits that community focused green spaces can bring to locals - from increased social connections to enabling a healthy lifestyle. Shaped by extensive consultation, Queensland Court & gardens provides a vibrant, accessible space featuring play for all ages. This project has also been recognised by Building with Nature and Landscape Institute for its success in transforming an underused & regularly flooded space into a resilient and biodiverse oasis.
A residents’ survey has revealed increased neighbourhood satisfaction following the transformation of underused greenspace in Cardonald. Land beside high-rise flats at Queensland Court and Gardens was brought to life in 2023 through the creation of a vibrant community park 🌳 complemented by sustainable drainage measures that reduce flood risk. The joint project between Southside Housing Association and the council through the #GlasgowCityDeal backed Metropolitan Glasgow Strategic Drainage Partnership is also part of the Hillington and Cardonald Surface Water Management Plan. This #ScotClimateWeek find out more about the creation of this more resilient community space 👇 https://ow.ly/tshV50TsUhY

Finally, with the launch of the Holyrood Park Strategic Plan by Historic Environment Scotland, our landscape and conservation management plan has 'gone live'. https://lnkd.in/dtP3VjyP It is an iterative plan that has informed the visions and aims of the strategic plan, and will guide decision-making in the Park. The StoryMap format allows it to be an easily accessible resource for anyone involved in the management of the park and its many conservation and archaeological designations, or simply seeking information on this special landscape and its stewardship.

A big thank you to Nick Bowen and Rosie Bookless from Raeburn Farquhar Bowen for taking time out of their busy schedule to give us a tour of their impressive new landscaping scheme for Queens Cross Housing Association at Woodside. This transformation is turning what was once a post-industrial corridor between Glasgow's city centre and the north into a vibrant, sustainable, and highly desirable local community. Back in 2020, Collective Architecture completed the refurbishment of Lorne Court, Katrine Court, and Torridon Court - three 22-storey tower blocks that were retrofitted to combat fuel poverty and set a new standard for high-rise housing. Now, with phase 1 of the landscaping scheme nearing completion, it’s exciting to see the entire project coming together. The new landscaping looks fantastic, and it’s brilliant to see a focus on active travel and creating spaces that prioritise inclusivity, particularly for girls.

The University of Stirling active travel boulevard is in construction! Using a new construction method at the University, Geoweb layers ensure existing mature trees will continue to thrive. This project is a key addition to the University of Stirling masterplan. It will connect recent RFB projects, Campus Central and the Sports Facility, with a widened accessible shared footpath and cycle route. The new route nestles beneath mature existing trees, easing steep gradients. New viewpoints looking over Airthrey Loch provide seating areas to pause and rest, capturing views of the University’s stunning designed landscape.
