RateMyApprenticeship

Online Audio and Video Media

The UK's leading job resource for young people seeking apprenticeships and school leaver schemes.

About us

RateMyApprenticeship is the sister website of RateMyPlacement, formed by three Loughborough undergraduates, Ali Lindsay, Oliver Sidwell and Chris Wickson in 2007. RateMyApprenticeship entered the school leaver market in 2013 following The Richard Review, which highlighted the ‘lack of impartial advice’ for school and college leavers. The rise in tuition fees also made it crucial - now, more than ever - for young people to know and understand the alternatives to going to university. Since then, RateMyApprenticeship has cemented itself as the go-to website for young people taking the first steps in their career, and attracts 100,000 monthly visitors. During National Apprenticeship Week 2022, we had over 46,000 students visit and search for their future employer.

If you’re looking for an apprenticeship this year, here’s a heads up… 👀 You NEED to be comfortable with a lot of video interviews Here are our tips and tricks for slaying your virtual job interviews 👇 ➡️ Make sure you have good wifi! Nothing is worse than dropping out and not being able to hear your interviewer properly or having to constantly repeat yourself as you keep breaking up! 📞 ➡️ Make sure to look presentable, have the room behind you clean, or have your background blurred. Try to look at the camera every so often and try to keep a smile on your face. You’re not turning up sweaty and flustered from commuting, so use this to your advantage. 😀 ➡️ Tone of voice - keep your voice friendly and light, if the interviewer is explaining something to you actively listen and reference what they said in your answers to questions if you can! See how you will look like the perfect candidate? Very mindful, very demure. 💅 ➡️ Make sure you are in a quiet location, it’ll make the whole process more stressful if you can hear people talking, cars going by, etc. Do yourself a favour and let the people around you know you’re interviewing so you are not disturbed. 🤫 ➡️ PUT YOUR PHONE ON SILENT AND PUT IT AWAY!!! We cannot emphasise this enough, it’s not a cute look if your phone goes off in the middle of an interview or you are distracted by notifications on your phone. Give the interview your full attention. 🙅🤳 ➡️ Have interview answers bullet-pointed on a screen in front of you, this will help you in case you have a brain fog moment (it happens to the best of us). 😶🌫️ ➡️ Always ask questions! This is so important as it makes you sound interested in the role or company. 🙋Some of our fav questions are: - What are your favourite and least favourite parts of your job? - How is success measured in this role? - Three months into this role, what would day-to-day responsibilities look like? - I saw [something] on your company website, how is this implemented? ➡️ Most importantly, trust yourself. Have those extra things around that make you feel more comfortable! Have a glass of water, wear comfy clothes, and have a cuddly toy in your lap. Video interviews don’t have to be so bad, do what you can before it, so you can thrive while doing it. 😚 PS. This is Lucy, our current Placement student, just before her interview with us 😯✨ #interview #interviewtips #apprenticeship #applications #advice

Does the term ‘network’ stress anyone else out? Last year, I used to cringe at the idea of having to network and don’t even get me started on having to casually do it online too… How do I network? Who should I connect with? What should I say to them? How do I find the right people? 🤔 I asked myself these questions and more when trying to network on LinkedIn. So, a year on, here’s my advice to anyone else feeling similarly to me: ✅Who do I connect with? 👉 Figure out what you want to learn! This can help with knowing who to reach out to. If you have something you want to learn, you can then find someone who can help you learn. This also makes an easy conversation starter. 👉 In your connection message, you could write something along the following: Hi [name], your experience in __ really stood out to me. I am currently trying to gain more knowledge in __, would you have the time to offer me some insight on the topic? 👉 Joining groups: This is a fantastic way to find like minded people and share your thoughts on your common interest. There are so many groups out there that are industry specific or for industry professionals! ✅ Reconnecting with people - How do I find great people I’ve met before 👉 The struggle is real when you’ve met someone but didn’t get their LinkedIn there and then. It feels a bit stalker-ish then trying to find their profile (don’t worry, I’ve been there too). However, I would push past these thoughts and connect! 👉 If you want to double-check that they know who you are, connect with a message like: Hi [name], it was great chatting to you about __ at [wherever you met them, like an event]! Would love to connect. 👉 If it was more a passive meeting, say a classmate, connect as well! If you don’t feel the need to put a message, don’t (if they don’t want to connect for whatever reason they can just decline it). 👉 It can be really easy to find classmates or old colleagues. Just look through the shared company, school or university profile and if they have some form of connection to them, you should be able to find them! ✅Networking with Companies - Which ones should I connect with? 👉 There are so many company pages on LinkedIn so it can be overwhelming trying to find the right ones to connect with. A good start are companies you have some form of connection with already, say an education institute or a company you have worked for before. 👉 You could also connect with companies you have an interest in working for or share values with. 👉 Finally, always connect with the companies you are applying to. Not only is this good to help with your application but it also shows your interest in them in case the recruiter does have a little look at your page! #Network #Networking #Connect #LinkedIn #Buildyournetwork #Advice

Should you be putting your LinkedIn on job applications? 🤔 The short answer is yes, absolutely! Why? 👉Because your recruiter can find out so much more about you and your experience through it. They can see skills and qualities that may not be so obvious from your CV or Cover letter. 👉It also can give them a better understanding of your personality, especially if you regularly interact with posts, these being your own or others. 👉Showcasing your passion for the industry, the key qualifications you have and the skills you have already developed, will make you stand out as a better candidate than your competition! 🥰 👉Also, attaching it to your CV makes the life of the recruiter so much easier. 😌 Though all this is dependent on if you keep your LinkedIn up to date and use your profile to its full extent. 🗓️ Here’s the ultimate checklist for your LinkedIn profile 👇 ✅Recent and professional profile picture ✅An appropriate headline ✅Matching experience and education to your CV (nothing is more suspicious then having your CV say one thing and your LinkedIn profile say another) ✅ Actual descriptions of your experience and education ✅Relevant connections ✅ Post engagement (posting, liking, commenting and reposting!) Ps: this is me preparing my LinkedIn last year to put on my applications 🤭
