AI-generated music is making waves – but not everyone is thrilled about it. While some see AI as a tool for creativity, others, like Celine Dion, are pushing back against AI-generated songs using their name and voice without permission. And she’s not alone – over 200 artists, including Billie Eilish and Aerosmith, recently signed an open letter calling AI music-generation an “assault on human creativity.” We see things differently. AI isn’t here to replace musicians – it’s here to enhance their creative process. For example, our portfolio company, Setmixer, empowers artists by enabling them to record every live performance in studio-quality multitrack audio, giving them more control over their music, not less. Another example is Vochlea Music who empowers musicians by enabling them to create music directly from their voice with their innovative voice-to-MIDI technology. Just like Indiana University professors Scott Deal and Jason Palamara, who developed AVATAR, an AI musical partner that listens and composes in real-time, we believe AI can be a collaborator, not a competitor. Is AI a threat to human creativity or a revolutionary tool for artists?
