  • Our new College guidance for GP practices employing Physician Associates is now available. This does not change our policy position that we oppose a role for PAs within general practice. However, we recognise that many practices already employ PAs and our guidance aims to give clarity and support to GPs and employers working with them and managing these roles. It includes Scope of Practice, Supervision, and Induction and Preceptorship to ensure safe and effective practice. You can find them on our website. https://lnkd.in/evh9ygZW The principles set out in the College’s red lines, originally agreed in 2017 and reinforced at our March 2024 Council meeting, remain in place. https://lnkd.in/e8RxK66B

  • Yesterday, MPs debated Lord Darzi’s report on NHS performance, which echoes what our members have been saying for years: underfunding and poor workforce planning are piling immense pressure on GPs, leaving patients to suffer the consequences. Thank you to Jeevun Sandher MP for raising the fact that many GPs do not have the necessary resources that they need to treat their patients and calling for the government to invest in primary care. We also heard from the Secretary of State for Health & Social Care, Wes Streeting MP, re-commit to shifting resources so that there are enough GPs to treat patients by growing primary care, including general practice, as a proportion of the NHS’s budget. We look forward to working with Department of Health & Social Care and NHS England to help shape the shift of care from hospitals into the community, and ensure this ambition is matched with the necessary resources. Helen Morgan MP, the newly appointed health spokesperson for the Lib Dems also raised our warning that on average, GPs are now responsible for 475 more patients than they were in 2016. This pressure is unsustainable, and the government must take urgent action to address the scale of the challenge revealed in Lord Darzi's report.

  • 🏆 Last week at our Annual Conference, we celebrated the success of our Research Paper of the Year winners! Congratulations to our Category 2 winners Rebecca Payne and Trisha Greenhalgh from the University of Oxford for their impactful research on patient safety incidents. Congratulations also to our Category 3 winner, Professor Niro Siriwardena, from the University of Lincoln who presented his important research on the MRCGP performance disparities between ethnic minority and white doctors. • 📢 What your College is doing for you On behalf of our members, in the past two weeks. ⬇️ * We held the RCGP Annual Conference in Liverpool, including a keynote address from the Health Secretary, Wes Streeting – his first speech to the profession since taking up the post. * We secured widespread media coverage of the Chair's conference speech showcasing new research showing GPs in deprived areas are responsible for almost 2,500 patients each. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gxYGZWct ➡️ https://lnkd.in/g-K3vq4Q * We successfully lobbied the Government to take forward changes to legislation to add GPs to the GMC speciality register, which will give GPs parity of esteem with hospital colleagues, with a commitment from the Health Secretary at our Conference. * The Minister with responsibility for primary care Stephen Kinnock MP attended our fringe event at the Labour Party conference, discussing how we can work together to address the challenges facing general practice. The event had over 100 attendees and excellent engagement. * We met with MPs across Labour, Liberal Democrat and Conservative Party Conferences, building relationships to ensure MPs speak up for general practice in Parliament. * We spoke at seven events during Party Conference season to share our recommendations with Parliamentarians, sector colleagues and delegates. * We landed an exclusive in the Telegraph warning that 42% of GPs have said they were unlikely to be working in general practice in five years’ time. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gb3PdZHq * We wrote an open letter to NHS England calling for a public commitment that the GP jobs created through the Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme will continue beyond the end of March 2025. * We responded to the Government's consultation on the National Planning Policy Framework highlighting the need to include GP practices infrastructure planning. * We've been quoted in the media on issues including GP video appointments, menopause, cancer detection, GP appointment length, and self testing.

“Guidelines Are NOT Tramlines” 📌 In nearly a decade as a full-time doctor, with four years as a GP, one thing I've witnessed repeatedly—both in medicine and life—is how guidelines can often become tramlines. I’ll never forget one of my early lessons as an FY1 doctor. A patient on my ward spiked a fever. Naturally, I prepared to take blood cultures. But when I informed the nurse, she stopped me in my tracks. "What was the temperature?" she asked. "38.1°C," I replied. Her response? "Guidelines say we only take blood cultures at 38.3°C or higher." I tried to push back but was quickly reminded that I was a newly qualified FY1, and she had over 30 years of experience as a matron. Outranked and uncertain, I hesitated. Later, during the medical handover, I mentioned it to the medical registrar. The response? Let’s just say I was publicly grilled. 😅 In front of the entire team, I was reminded of two critical points: 1) A fever is a fever. 2) Clinical expertise matters more than rigid adherence to numbers. How often do we let guidelines—designed to guide us—become tramlines that limit our thinking? Medicine is about patients, not protocols. While guidelines are invaluable, they don’t replace human judgment. In that moment, I learned the importance of balancing evidence with clinical intuition. It’s a lesson that has stayed with me, shaping the way I approach my patients every day since. #guidelines #medicine #lifelessons #clinicalLeadership
