    Starting the week by sending huge congratulations to our Founder, Natalie Ellis Chartered FCIPD on her award win at the National Business Women's Awards on Friday night at the Leonardo Royal Hotel in London. Natalie won the Gold award for Female Business Leader of the year (micro category) which was voted for by the public, so if you voted - thank you! Huge congratulations to all of the winners and finalists, it certainly was a night to remember! We loved Andy and Rory, the singing chefs!     Happy Friday from Team Rebox HR! What a great few weeks it has been for us, we have been busy producing the toolkits for our clients ready for the employment law changes relating to the prevention of sexual harassment at work and tipping rules. Even if you're not a client, the packs are available to purchase, so get in touch if you need one. Additionally, we've been preparing for the recording of episode 4 of our podcast HR Unboxed.     I don't know if anyone saw the news this morning 👀 'Manager ignoring a colleague and not saying "Hello" breaks employment law' 😲 I'll be honest there is more to this case than the headline, however, I can only imagine that Employer's and those running businesses, are somewhat anxious about "doing the right thing", or worried about "doing too much" especially given the forthcoming changes in legislation.🙆♀️ * Employer's current thought process * 💭 ... It’s important to acknowledge your employees - say hello to them each morning, but not too enthusiastically. You want to create a welcoming environment, but don’t be overly friendly, as that might come off as unprofessional or, worse, unwanted attention. 🙅♂️ It’s important to show appreciation for their work, but don’t compliment them too often, it could be perceived as favouritism, or even lead to harassment claims. 😬 Offer feedback, but not too much, because constant feedback could be seen as micromanaging, leading to disengagement. 😟 However, if you don’t offer enough feedback, you might be accused of being neglectful or disinterested in their professional growth. 📈 Keep communication open, but not too open; after all, oversharing could blur professional boundaries. 🙇♀️ And whatever you do, be inclusive! But not so inclusive that employees start to think you’re playing favourites by trying too hard to include everyone equally. Remember, you should be fair and impartial, but don’t be so impartial that your lack of engagement could be mistaken for indifference. Most importantly, adhere to all legal and ethical standards - but not too much, because then you might make your workplace culture so suffocating that people feel they can’t breathe without consulting HR.     It's October, that means new legislation is coming into force. On 26th October, the Worker Protection Act 2023 comes into effect, this introduces stronger protections to tackle sexual harassment in the workplace which aims to create a safer, more respectful working environment. Here’s what you need to know: 🙅 No Employer is exempt, however, the “reasonable” actions put in place will be different from one employer to another. It will depend on their resource, size and the particular risk factors present in their working environment. 📝 Employers now have a legal duty to take all reasonable steps, including updating policies and conducting risk assessments, to prevent sexual harassment, increasing their accountability and ensuring proactive measures are in place. 👥 Workers are protected from third-party harassment, including customers, clients and visitors. 📁 Workers can file claims, and employers may face penalties if they fail to provide reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment even if no allegations have been made. 👨🏫 Training can be offered to both management and workers to raise awareness of acceptable workplace behaviour. Stay attentive to changes in the workplace and watch for any warning signs. 💰 Compensation at an employment tribunal can be increased by up to 25% if an employer fails to fulfil their legal obligations. Additionally, there is no cap on the compensation awarded for sexual harassment claims. If you need more information or assistance with your policies and documentation, we are here to support you.
