We're wrapping up International Women’s Day with this final spotlight on Helena Benton, Head of Risk, Safety & Compliance. Helena joined the Red Funnel team last September. Her main responsibility is to support all departments in keeping all people and passengers safe – as well as considering impact on the environment both ashore and at sea and ensuring we are compliant across the board. Helena has a wealth of maritime experience, having previously worked as a deck hand on tug and pilot boats, as deck hand offshore and as a Deck Officer for the Merchant Navy. Moving her career ashore, Helena has experience in the oil and gas industry, as well as port operations and working with ROROs (roll on roll off vessels like our Raptors). Helena is just one of the 1.2% of women working in a seafaring career, a globally male dominated sector. For women looking to get into a career at sea, Helena’s words of wisdom are: 💬 “Be confident, stay resilient and never let anyone tell you that you do not belong. The maritime industry can be tough, but it is a highly rewarding career. Competence and determination will earn you respect so learn as much as you can, remember to stand your ground and always look out for yourself and your team. She started her career on a large roll on roll off cargo ship in deep sea, travelling from Turkey to France. Surprisingly her first ever time abroad!🌊 As a deckhand at Red Funnel, Elizabeth’s main duties include mooring the boat, loading vehicles and freight onboard and discharging it safely. Her roles also include having the helm during passage and lookout duties. During crossings when she’s not on the bridge, Elizabeth carries out maintenance around the ship alongside the other deck crew.👩🔧 Her favourite boat to work on is Red Eagle! 💬 “It can be a hard job at times working at sea, but I’ve been to places and seen things I would never have known existed.” Today, we are celebrating Elizabeth alongside ALL the incredible women working at Red Funnel.🤩 #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2025 #RedFunnel #RedFunnelFerry

We had a fantastic time representing the Visit Isle of Wight Exhibition Partnership at the Caravan, Camping and Motorhome Show at the NEC Birmingham last week! There was a lot of interest in the beautiful Island, and it was wonderful to meet so many amazing people and help them plan their next (or first!) visit. We especially loved chatting with Tom and Sandra from Manchester, who shared fond memories of a past trip but lamented that they never spotted a red squirrel. To give them a little head start for their next adventure, we gifted them a small memento - and they’re now more determined than ever to see one in the wild!
