  • I ran a workshop at the World of Learning Conference #WOL24 with Sonali Narendran, from Starbucks yesterday exploring the crucial role of managers in the organizational learning ecosystem. The following ideas were gathered from the room; hope they may be useful for you. How can we support manager buy-in for learning? - Get alongside to fully understand their needs - Consult about what development is needed for their team - Start with the value and “why”; what is the benefit is of an initiative! - Clearly link learning to their operational priorities and needs - Co-design solutions to connect to their “why” and operational goals - Involve them in the development of solutions and what works for them - Time is often a challenge; create guidance on opportunities to make it easy - Develop tools that supports learning value from small-time investments - Provide explanations of how others have successfully implemented learning - Managers may need support, not all have been prepared to develop others - Help managers recognize how they are already supporting learning - Implement coaching to develop their behaviours and skills - Take the learning to them and provide solutions that work in their context How can we support managers to enhance the learning culture in their context? - Engage and get the support of senior leaders and grow from there - Demonstrate the impact for example being more productive or motivated - Highlight the need to make time for learning and benefits of doing so - Create engaging, practical experiences that demonstrate learning value - Think about how we “market” learning and our key value messaging - Think about their KPIs, it isn’t often an area managers are appraised on - Encourage staff and team reflection and sharing, e.g. during meetings - Ensure all staff have a live, negotiated personal development plan - Provide contextual resources which they can draw on What tactics can we encourage managers to use to integrate learning in work? - Create and curate bite size learning which can be accessed in work - Explore and use AI tools for performance support - Set goals for example 30 mins of work-based development over 6 weeks - Create a leadership framework- aligned to objectives of line managers - Maintain drumbeat reinforcing the benefits of integrating learning in work - Build reflection as an ongoing process - Use storytelling and case studies to give powerful success narratives - Reinforce psychological safety to ensure learning through mistakes is safe - Facilitate learning moments or discussions during the day - Encourage peer sharing and coaching - Highlight on-the-job learning opportunities Thanks to a great group for sharing their top tips and ideas. #LearningandDevelopment #Managers #WOL24

Mistakes are often the most powerful ways in which we learn! But, they are often stigmatized, punished through performance improvement plans or cause people to end up in the negative lower-left reaches of a 9-box talent grid. Why not click on the link below to listen to my conversation with Gerry Murray when we discuss "Why we need to start talking about mistakes ... positively." https://lnkd.in/erNnH9xA #LearningandDevelopment #LnD #Mistakes #Psychologicalsafety #Performance

Fascinating BBC News report that Beyoncé is choosing not to create videos as they might be a “distraction from the quality of the voice and the music … I thought it was important that during a time where all we see is visuals, that the world can focus on the voice” the star said. BBC article link - https://lnkd.in/eDXu2R_P It’s a smart perception that we must embrace in learning. Too often multimedia causes cognitive overload; less is often more if we are serious about supporting learners! And if you do want to make videos and want grab the evidence about making effective ones check out this helpful blog “Video for learning –15 things the research says – some may shock you …” by Donald Clark Blog link - https://lnkd.in/ewV4NwB3 (Crazy image from Vilkasss, Pixabay)

If you missed it you may want to check out the brilliant podcast series from LAS (LearningAge Solutions Ltd) below which I took part in. Such a great format ... think its the first time I shared so publicly of my transformational time in rehab, nearly dying and getting the courage to write a book after my confidence was pretty much destroyed by an English teacher at school! Link to my chat with Rob Hubbard is at: https://lnkd.in/e_UPHQwr

Season 2 of Rob Hubbard's 3 Life Lessons is coming soon.. In the meantime, the full Season 1 is now available. All links can be found on the 3 Life Lessons page.
