🚨 Tragic Consequences: A Call for Safer AI 🚨 The heartbreaking story of Sewell Setzer, a 14-year-old who took his life after interactions with chatbots on Character.AI, has deeply affected us all. Our founder, Alice Hendy MBE, shares her thoughts: “Chatbots operate within the confines of pre-set parameters and data-driven responses. They lack the depth of understanding necessary to navigate the complex emotional landscapes of those who turn to them in moments of despair. The illusion of empathy offered by chatbots can be dangerously misleading, particularly for vulnerable individuals seeking genuine connection. We must advocate for the development of AI systems that prioritise user safety, incorporating robust ethical guidelines and mental health support mechanisms. I am so deeply sorry for the loss of Sewell and send his family all my love.” This devastating incident underscores the urgent need for safer, more ethical AI development. We owe it to young people and vulnerable users everywhere to ensure that digital tools are supportive, responsible, and safe. Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to Sewell’s family. Let’s push for change together, and make sure no one else has to experience such a tragic loss. #MentalHealthMatters #AIEthics #UserSafety #DigitalWellbeing #MentalHealthSupport #ProtectTheVulnerable #RppleEffect

🛑 Urgent action: Dangerous suicide and hate forums must be regulated A joint letter by The Mental Health Foundation, 𝗥;𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 and over 10 other leading organisations is calling on the government to urgently regulate the most dangerous online forums that promote and glorify suicide, and that spread hate. On the letter and need for this action, Alice Hendy MBE, R;pple Founder and CEO, states: “We stand at a critical juncture where the mental health crisis demands our immediate attention. Our nation faces its highest suicide rates in over two decades, a stark reminder that mental well-being is just as important as physical health. By making mental health a top priority, we can foster a society where individuals are empowered to seek help without stigma, and where preventive measures are in place to save lives. This isn’t just about addressing a problem; it’s about transforming our approach to health and well-being for generations to come. The time for action is now.” 👉 Read the joint letter to the Prime Minister here: https://lnkd.in/eQ7wEfZK #SuicidePrevention #MentalHealthAwareness #OnlineSafety #ProtectLives #GovernmentAction #SayNoToHate
