Risk know-how helps communities navigate risk information.
About us
Risk know-how helps communities navigate risk information. All over the world people have conversations about risks with each other. Having Risk know-how helps them assess claims and data about risk, and weigh up what should be done. This initiative supports people who find themselves at the heart of such discussions, and who are involved in helping others to navigate risk information – Risk know-how practitioners. On our webpage, you can find useful resources and case studies, as well as the first Risk know-how Framework, developed with practitioners and experts, setting out the key risk concepts needed to understand risk. The Risk know-how initiative is run by teams at Sense about Science, a UK-based charity which advocates for evidence-based policy and discussions, and the Institute for the Public Understanding of Risk in Singapore, with funding from the Lloyd’s Register Foundation.

Risk know-how is an international partnership between Lloyd's Register Foundation, Sense about Science, and the LRF Institute for the Public Understanding of Risk. They work with communities around the world to empower them to make informed decisions about #risk and to have the know-how to weigh-up trade-offs. In this blog, Alfie Hoar, Project and Engagement Officer at Risk know-how discusses how their unique framework is central to helping individuals and communities navigate risk information. 🤓 This weekend we were part of the #ScienceCommunication Symposium, at Instituto Cervantes Manchester, organised by the Society of Spanish Researchers in the UK. 🔴 Our team member Maricarmen Climént was there sharing how to apply #Riskknowhow in research and journalism - understanding risks can make a difference in peoples decisions! It was a very inspiring event that left everyone motivated to keep bridging science, media, and policy in a way that’s useful and engaging— creating things people genuinely want to hear! Thank you to all organisers: Fernando Gomollón Bel, Asier R. Muguruza, PhD y Marta Dominguez Prieto.

📣 Calling all #journalists! 📣 We have published two guides in the Science Media Centre, Spain on telling stories about #risks on any topic: #medications, #diets, #hurricanes, #AI and more. These guides bring together the most important points for explaining any type of risk and addressing its complexity: 👵 identifying who is affected 🔢 explaining the numbers involved 🏘 considering the perspective of a community… and much more. Written by Maricarmen Climént and reviewed by Leonor Sierra, both of whom are Risk know-how team members. Available in both English and Spanish. We're eager to see how they support your narratives! Thanks, Pampa García Molina for supporting this publication. See guides in the comments section👇

Our team member, Maricarmen Climént, conducted a session for journalists and communicators at Universidad de la Comunicación, S.C. 🌀 🔫 🍟 The audience was highly engaged, asking questions about how to communicate risks related to natural disasters, violence, civil safety, food, and much more. The need for risk know-how is evident, and we continue to work on that. Thanks, Guadalupe Gutiérrez for the invitation to connect with the students and professors of your community!

⚠️ Risk practitioners face a double challenge ⚠️ They must gather and interpret technical information about risk, and also be able to convey that information to community members in understandable, actionable terms. 💡 The new 'Understanding and Communicating Risk' course provides guidance on both fronts. Developed by LRF Institute for the Public Understanding of Risk the course draws on work from the #RiskKnowhow initiative, to provide practitioners with the tools to ensure they are able to effectively communicate #risk information Read more about what the course entails from one of the instructors, Olivia Jensen 👇

Are you brilliant or just lucky? Whatever your answer, David Spiegelhalter suggests we should rethink how we view luck. We believe his insights also apply at a community level. 😎 “…people tend to overestimate the role of their efforts and acquired skills, whereas they should mainly be grateful for their constitutive luck.” 🍀“Constitutive luck… covers all the fortunate or unfortunate circumstances of your very existence; the period of history in which you were born, your parents, background, genes and character traits.” 👉 “Once we properly acknowledge our existential and constitutive luck, we are left with a daunting but hopeful task: to try to make the best of the hand we’ve been dealt." The big idea: should we be thinking about luck differently?
