The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA)

At the ASSP-MEC 2025 Conference in Bahrain, RoSPA CEO Becky Hickman had the privilege of delivering the keynote at the ‘Women in Safety’ panel. Becky spoke about the importance of creating a profession where leadership and talent are not defined by gender. She also recognised the incredible achievements of Mrs Afaf Zainalabedin, BAPCO’s Deputy CEO, a trailblazer who became the company’s highest-ranking female leader in 2022. A highlight of Becky’s speech was RoSPA’s Women in Safety Programme, a partnership with L'Oréal and Nike, which is empowering women through mentorship, leadership training, and networks. The programme has already helped women like Sarah Steers CFIOSH and Loveness Marabwa achieve remarkable milestones and advance their careers in safety leadership. Thank you to American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP), aramco, and the Women in Safety leads: Karen J. Hewitt MBA FIIRSM (Leaderlike), Malcolm Staves FIIRSM FIChemE (L’Oréal), Sittichoke Huckuntod (Nike), and Dr Karen McDonnell CFIOSH (RoSPA) for making this event possible.

The Department for Transport is developing a strategy which will set the high-level direction for how transport should be designed, built and operated in England over the next 10 years. Today is an inspiring day as The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) gets closer towards our vision of an accident-free world. I had the pleasure of meeting Fabian Hamilton the MP for Leeds North-East and Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cycling and Walking. As fellow cyclists and walkers, we talked about how a strong road safety strategy for England can really make a difference in saving lives and preventing accidents—a goal close to ROSPA’s heart and RoSPA’s National Accident Prevention Strategy. Later, I’m spending time at the Office for Product Safety and Standards sharing our thoughts on the safe and responsible use of fireworks. I will also be joining the Consumer Reference Panel—a great team that helps shape product safety and regulation by offering valuable consumer insights.
