Dr Gordon Hale, Consultant Dermatologist at Ross Hall Clinic Braehead, is running a 70 mile ultramarathon – ‘The Wall’ – on the 14th of June, 2025, in aid of the Ichthyosis Support Group 🏃 Ichthyosis (pronounced Ick-thee-o-sis) describes a group of conditions in which the skin is dry and scaly. Lots of people have dry skin conditions (such as eczema or psoriasis) but they tend to be patchy and they come and go. By contrast, in ichthyosis the scaling is continuous and usually affects the whole body. There is no cure for ichthyosis at present, but it is possible to manage the symptoms. The main aim of treatment is to improve the condition of the skin (make it less dry and less scaly, for example) and to relieve discomfort. Ichthyosis in the severe forms can be life threatening, but even in the milder forms a strict daily skin care regime is needed, whilst having a visible skin condition can prove psychologically challenging. Following Hadrian’s Wall from Carlisle to Newcastle, Dr Hale is taking on the ultramarathon because ‘as a member of the charity's medical advisory board and as a dermatologist I am all too aware of the important work which the charity carries out to help support children, adults and families affected by forms of ichthyosis. Your donation can help the charity to continue this work and for that I am very grateful.’ To find out more about this incredible challenge, and to donate to the fundraiser, click here ⬇️ https://bit.ly/4iNtgWK

Michael, a patient of ours from January at Ross Hall Hospital, required a stay in our Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after his cardiac bypass operation. He was back to visit last week for some follow-up appointments, so he and his wife decided to come see the ICU team who had looked after him. He doesn’t remember much of his time with us in ICU, but Katie, Clinical Lead for the department, put together a patient diary for him which went through the events of his stay, enabling him and his wife to go over it regularly and fill in the gaps. Both he and his wife were so appreciative of the critical care team and it was lovely to see a patient that was so poorly come back and be so well! As the only private hospital in Scotland with a level 3 Intensive Care Unit, we are proud to offer this elevated level of care and support to those patients who need it most 🏥

A very thankful patient of Mr Khaver Qureshi, Consultant Urological Surgeon at Ross Hall Hospital, recently sent us on their success story from their reversal vasectomy procedure... ⬇️ 'Me and my partner wanted to send an email to Ross Hall Hospital to let you know of a very successful procedure I had done there. I had a vasectomy reversal done and 6 weeks or so later my partner was pregnant. Weeks after our first Opie was born she was pregnant again with our second. Odin was born less than a year later so we had Irish twins, and now Odin is about to turn 1, Opie is about to turn 2, and Kay is now pregnant with twins! Such an amazing outcome... we just wanted to share our massive thanks to the hospital along with Mr Qureshi. We couldn’t have asked for a better outcome and must hold a world record for reversal to 4 children! Ross Hall and Mr Qureshi allowed us to have a family. Many many thanks Tim, Kay, Opie, Odin and the twins!' What an amazing story, and well done to Mr Qureshi for such an incredible outcome! 👏

A young Scottish footballer, Ethan Walker, suffered life-threatening injuries whilst at college in the United States. After finally being able to travel back home, he still needed knee surgery, and this is where he met Professor Gordon Mackay, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Ross Hall Hospital. Prof Mackay was so inspired by Ethan’s story and journey that he and Ethan, alongside two members of the Tartan Army, Martyn and Stephen, decided to cycle from Hampden Park in Glasgow to Munich (1200km!) in time for the opening game of Euro 2024 where Germany hosted Scotland. This immense journey was filmed to create the new documentary, 'Make it to Munich.' Ahead of its release in the UK on May 16, the premiere took place over the weekend at the closing gala of the Glasgow Film Festival. To celebrate the momentous occasion Ethan, Prof MacKay and members of the Ross Hall theatre team were in attendance, with some of the guys even in their kilts! 📽️
