  • This week’s Global Health Partnerships (formerly THET)’s Diaspora Awards event recognised individual diaspora winners who exemplify innovation and initiative, paving the way for a healthier future for all.   Clinical, People team, and Race Equality Chair of Spire Healthcare Group plc joined changemakers and leaders from Kenya, Malawi, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania and Nigeria, along with Justin Ash, chair of trustees of Global Health Partnerships (formerly THET) and chief executive of Spire.   The event highlighted the transformative work being done in Africa by healthcare professionals (nurses, consultants, health experts), dignitaries, embassies in the UK and abroad, with the collective purpose to improve health outcomes and make a real impact to communities that do not have access to healthcare resources.

  • Sir Charlie Mayfield (former chair of John Lewis Partners) has published phase one findings of his independent Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) -commissioned review into long-term sickness in the UK workforce. Sir Charlie’s Keep Britain Working Review is looking at two important elements: 1. what employers can do to tackle economic inactivity due to ill-health and disability, and 2. what the government needs to do to encourage and support people living with ill-health and disabled people in work. Through Spire’s two occupational health businesses (Spire Occupational Health and Vita Health Group) we know that a combination of prevention, retention, intervention and rehabilitation is the best way to address the rising numbers of people who are out of work due to mental health and musculoskeletal conditions. Looking at Vita’s track record alone during 2023, 97% of its corporate musculoskeletal patients returned to work after treatment. This is a phenomenal result for those employees and those businesses. This is proof that large UK companies are already benefitting from well-planned, well-resourced and integrated occupational health programmes. We also know from our own data (2024) that 79% of employees we surveyed are calling for more UK companies to provide occupational health services. They also believe that the government should encourage companies to invest in OH. While over a third of employees believe their companies have the greatest responsibility for their health, a huge 70 percent have never been referred for OH services. Surprisingly only 33 percent of employers said they knew the financial benefits of investing in OH and employee wellbeing programmes. Like Sir Charlie, Spire has long called for stronger incentives such as tax breaks for businesses to address employee ill health. Managing employee health with a preventative mindset will also be more cost effective for a business and the NHS in the long-term. Why should working Britons only have the NHS as the single option to them when they become ill with mental health or musculoskeletal conditions, when these conditions are impacting their ability to work? At Spire Healthcare we already provide tailored occupational health services to thousands of UK employees, across hundreds of businesses – from small to large private companies and government departments. Occupational health works and we know that it’s a gold star preventative solution to the lengthy NHS waiting lists. Prevention of employee ill health is good for employees, businesses and the NHS – we agree that the system needs change and there will be many that agree to this. We welcome Sir Charlie’s report and we look forward to engaging with him and his team. • Looking forward to the HSJ Events Partnership Awards dinner tonight, celebrating our work with NHS Humber Health Partnership colleagues to improve orthopaedics outcomes. Our two-year project to reduce patients’ length of stay for joint replacements has been replicated in the NHS. Notably, there have been reductions in lengths of stay at NHS hospitals in the Humber region, allowing them to treat more patients while maintaining safety.   Best of luck to all finalists!   Michele Millard Maryellen Dean RN, RM, MSc Tom Symes #patientsafety

Spire Healthcare Group plc is thrilled to be recognised for outstanding dedication to improving healthcare and effective collaboration with the NHS across England – we have been named by HSJ Events as a finalist for the ‘Best Elective Care Recovery Initiative’ award in the HSJ Partnership Awards 2025. Our project aimed to reduce all patients’ length of stay for joint replacements, improve patient outcomes, free up beds to enable an increase in capacity, and help to reduce NHS waiting lists by seeing more patients more quickly. Spire has successfully created more capacity and treated 26% more NHS orthopaedic patients from multiple NHS hospitals over the last two years through this project, including the introduction of a 23-hour joint replacement programme for suitable patients. Now in their eighth year, the HSJ Partnership Awards are a respected mark of the strongest relationships and collaborations between NHS organisations and independent providers working together to bring benefits to patients. We are one of the finalists to be shortlisted from over 280 entries and look forward to the final awards ceremony on 20 March in London. Partnering with the NHS to improve safety and provide quality care for waiting patients, is important to Spire Healthcare. We are focused on raising quality and delivering care to help people get back to what matters in their lives.
