August—often seen as a quieter time for the Co Sec team, right? Well, maybe not! But we do take advantage of this period to plan ahead for the upcoming year. We’re sharing our top tips for staying proactive rather than reactive: Board and Committee Meeting Preparations: 1. Confirm Board and committee dates for 2025, 2026, and even 2027, ensuring they’re in everyone’s diaries. 2. Start drafting Board and committee agendas and schedule review meetings with the Chair and respective Committee Chairs. 3. Revisit the Schedule of Matters reserved for the Board and the Committee Terms of Reference—when was the last time yours were reviewed and updated? 4. Review the past 12 months of Board and Committee minutes to ensure all responsibilities were addressed, and if not, plan a ‘catch-all’ session. 5. We did it! We provided an Accessible. Affordable. Applicable platform for like minded governance professionals to come together and cover some of the smoking hot topics in the governance world right now! Kerry Round, FCG kicked off proceedings celebrating the role of Company Secretary is in today's world, a fact endorsed only last week by HRH Charles III. Nicola Ellwood MSc FMAC ANLP, Executive Coach picked up the mantel and encouraged us all to 'Value your map' - we all had a spring in our step after this presentation. Rob Sumroy, partner at Slaughter and May (the lad from Leeds), provided key context for ensuing AI was on the Board's agenda and outlined the biggest risk relating to AI was to 'not use it'. Martha McPherson and Marigold Melton consultants from Ever Sustainable hosted a fireside chat and really challenged our thinking (and prompted lots of note taking) on Double Materiality and the sustainability climate. Deeya Ray, Associate from Shakespeare Martineau enlightened us on key changes to Companies House that are in place and those that are yet to come. Claire Taylor and Kerry Round, FCG held break-out sessions on "Risk and the road ahead" and "GC as Co Sec" after which, we all collapsed in a heap full to the brim with knowledge and networking!
