About us

The Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) is the UK’s learned society for geography and professional body for geographers. We are also a membership organisation and a registered charity. The Society was founded in 1830 to advance geographical science and this remains our core purpose. We achieve this through supporting geographical research, education, and fieldwork and expeditions, as well as by advocating on behalf of the discipline, supporting geographers in professional practice, and promoting geography to public audiences. As a professional body, we provide support, opportunities and recognition to professionals using geographical knowledge and skills in the workplace across sectors. We welcome professional geographers, geography graduates and all those with an enthusiasm for geography, travel and exploration to join the Society. Visit our website to find out more.

  • Scottish exceptionalism is a widely-held assumption that, in Scotland, racism and Islamophobia are insignificant. Research by geographers at Newcastle University has directly challenged the assumption in Scotland that racism and Islamophobia are only of concern in England, focusing on how Scotland's political, policy and practice settings have avoided addressing racism, which has predominantly been viewed there as an 'English problem'. This study highlights the marginalisation of young Muslims following significant international events, particularly emphasising the intricate ways in which political discourse and media, in the wake of 9/11, influenced our encounters with racism and Islamophobia. Subsequent research involving Sikh men revealed how they counteract everyday racism, educate others, and navigate multicultural interactions to foster a robust sense of Scottish identity. • This past June, we hosted a joint event with the Historical Association to discuss the impacts of AI on teaching and assessment. 💻 The event, which brought together 60 primary and secondary school teachers and associated awarding bodies, highlighted the opportunities AI presents for enhancing geographical skills and knowledge in the classroom, while also addressing the risks and challenges. 🏫 After discussing the limitations and challenges of AI in teaching, Paul Logue, Head of Geography at St Dominic’s Sixth Form College, also spoke about the importance of teachers embracing AI, stating: 🗣️ "AI is changing the nature of things very quickly. I believe every teacher should get on board the AI train now so they don’t get left behind. This could be a real game changer in reducing the administrative workload of the standard classroom teacher, which is my number one challenge as a teacher." ➡️ Read more: https://lnkd.in/eYkjPZCD

  • Hedgerows are more than just a signature feature of the British countryside; they're essential habitats for wildlife and play an important role in tackling climate change. 🐛🌍 Unfortunately, agricultural intensification between the 1940s and 1990s put them at risk, and more recently, inconsistent maintenance has resulted in gappy hedges or overgrown lines of trees. 🗺️ In our latest geovisualisation, Josep Serra Gallego, a Spatial Data Scientist at the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH), shares how he and his fellow researchers produced the most comprehensive map of hedgerows across England by using LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) remote sensing data to guide efforts in planting and restoring these delicate ecosystems. 📹 Check out the snippet below of the map in use. 👉 To read more about what data they used, how they chose to visualise it, and who the map may be most beneficial for, head here: https://lnkd.in/esTgjpGW
