“I was at my wits end - I didn’t want to be here.” After the death of his wife from cancer, John left his job in the Army to support his young children. Previously a field-based engineer, he found it difficult adjusting to life as a single parent living on benefits. The mental health and wellbeing needs of the Armed Forces community and their families are complex. Your poppy shows you care and helps the Royal British Legion provide practical support for ex-service personnel whenever they need us. This year, support the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal and help us continue our vital work supporting veterans like John.

About us
Think you know the Royal British Legion? Think again. You probably know us for our poppies and recognise our name but the day-to-day work we do to support the Armed Forces community might surprise you! We’re the country’s largest Armed Forces charity. We help serving and ex-serving personnel, and their families, live fulfilling lives through a wide range of support and services. We advocate and campaign to government on behalf of the Armed Forces community, as well as leading the nation in Remembrance to ensure their sacrifices are never forgotten. We’re here for those who’ve served to defend our nation, its democratic freedoms and our way of life. To put it plainly, we’ve always got their backs, whatever stage of life they’re at. Help shape our future It’s a really exciting time to join us and play a part in changing the lives of the people we support, and our future capacity and capability. Working at RBL means working with colleagues who are young at heart, keen to learn and eager to make change. Our team is massively committed to our mission and proud of what we achieve. We employ around 1,800 people across the country to campaign on behalf of the Armed Forces Community, deliver support services, lead Remembrance, raise funds to support our work and develop and run the organisation and our network of membership branches. From our major hub offices, we work collaboratively and have flexible/hybrid working practices in place. And with the latest technology colleagues can connect with one another, our members and beneficiaries, and come together around our common purpose and values.

“It makes me proud standing in the Guildhall on Remembrance Sunday, seeing everyone wearing a poppy, making sure those who have served are never forgotten.” Louise has been a dedicated volunteer for the Poppy Appeal since 2002, stepping into the role of Poppy Appeal Organiser in Portsmouth a few years later. Since then, she has collected donations at her local Morrisons. Morrisons has long been a supporter of the Poppy Appeal, welcoming Louise and other volunteers into their stores. "They're always eager to provide us with a prime location in their stores, and the staff are incredibly supportive of the volunteers." As a member of the Armed Forces community, Louise has firsthand experience of the impact these funds can have. Her husband, a veteran of the Falklands conflict, was diagnosed with PTSD in 2005, and RBL has played a crucial role in securing his pensions, benefits, and helping them secure their home. “Because we know what the Legion can do and how they help, this is why we keep collecting.” A huge thank you to Morrisons for their continued support of the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal. Be sure to visit your local store to make a donation and pick up your poppy.

Dave Taylor has been supporting the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal for 15 years and is one of our dedicated Poppy Appeal Organisers who will be collecting donations at his local Sainsbury’s store in Gravesend. “Many of my family have served, including my father who was with 3rd Battalion Coldstream Guards,” “Along with my team of volunteers, I collect at events all year round!” says Dave “Sainsburys are one of our best supporters each year. Their customers never let us down with their generosity!” Collectors will be in Sainsbury's stores across the UK, and customers can also drop off poppies containing single-use plastic in-store for recycling until 20 November.

The Royal British Legion’s 2024 Poppy Appeal launches today! This morning, it was our pleasure to host members of the Armed Forces community at HMS President. As Poppy Appeal collectors begin fundraising in local communities across the country, we were joined by Service personnel, veterans and military families who shared the unique challenges they face, and how donations to the Royal British Legion can help. Led by a Military Physical Training Instructor, the group also took part in a mindfulness session to highlight some of the techniques used by Service personnel and veterans to help build mental resilience. From risking their lives in warzones to support for family members and children who may struggle with the upheaval and disruption of service life, the mental health needs of the Armed Forces community are complex Wearing your poppy is a visual way to thank the Armed Forces for the sacrifices they make every day to protect our freedom and way of life. And donations help the Royal British Legion continue its vital work supporting the supporting the Armed Forces community with whatever they need, whenever they need it.

Royal British Legion reposted this
Early start at HMS President for the national launch of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2024. Thank you to the many journalists who came along to speak with members of the armed forces community and learn about why the Poppy Appeal matters so much. It was an incredible privilege for me to speak with David Plant who served in The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment. He was on a routine patrol in Helmand Province in July 2010 when he stood on a Taliban improvised explosive device and lost both his legs. The Royal British Legion has supported David on his difficult journey over the past fourteen years and we will continue to do so thanks to the funds raised through the Poppy Appeal. Please wear your poppy to show you care and donate at: britishlegion.org.uk #poppyappeal #royalbritishlegion #veteran #armedforcescommunity You can read more about David’s experience here: https://lnkd.in/eczUhgwT
