Our previous engagement with an NHS mental health trust highlights how a focused and strategic approach can turn financial challenges into sustainable solutions. The Trust was facing a £9m deficit, with additional cost and income pressures. To meet a challenging £20m Cost Improvement Programme (CIP) target, they partnered with SSG Health (now Real World Health) through the National Financial Improvement Programme. Key achievements included: 1)Strategic Implementation: We guided the Trust in turning its clinical strategy into a community-focused action plan to reduce high-cost inpatient care. 2)Operational Efficiency: By reconfiguring 25% of back-office processes and tightening controls on spending, we helped boost non-pay savings and increase overall efficiency. 3)Change Management: A comprehensive staff engagement and capability-building initiative empowered over 150 teams to drive impactful change. The results? The Trust achieved financial balance the following year and cut its in-year deficit to just £1m. Wise words from our fearless leader Scott Fletcher. We can't keep expecting things to change by throwing bodies at the problem. We need to #InvestInData! #NHS #Transformation #Healthcare #Budget2024
As a team deeply committed to supporting the NHS, we were of course heavily focused on the budget today. While we welcome the significant spending increases (particularly those that go towards much-needed repairs to support elective capacity), productivity growth is always mentioned in the same breath. At Real World Health, we’re proud to have helped the NHS save millions in inpatient beds, mental health crisis reduction, and elective theatre capacity, but what has been absolutely essential to all of those successes was data. Simply putting more people in won't provide anywhere near the same return on investment as investing in data. We hear all the time about digital solutions, data and reports but actually these are used far less often than you’d think in NHS day-to-day decision making. So often decisions are made by habit or heuristics and what works anecdotally, rather than getting into the data to see what’s working. Reams and reams of data are available. This is often held by different organisations that talk every day but work off different evidence bases! Frankly, we care far less about our National Insurance bill going up than we do about NHS investment going on the right things. We can't keep tackling the problems the same way we have for years, because it won't work. We have to use this money wisely by investing in managers, investing in data (connecting it and using it better), but most importantly - use data to understand where to spend it! #DataDrivenHealthcare #NHSTransformation #MachineLearning #HealthcareInnovation #Budget2024 #LinkedInInsiderUK #NHS RwHealth Andrew Bucknor Richard Parker Jamie Papasavvas Joseph Frost

“Investment in technology is fantastic. But to get anything out of it and ensure we are really changing how NHS staff work, we must also close the digital skills gap.” Following the publication of the report from Lord Darzi exploring the state of the NHS, HTN sought comments and reactions from a range of stakeholders from across the health and technology sector. 𝗧𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗛𝗦 𝗪𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀: 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 With waiting lists in the NHS at an all-time high, it's no surprise that health leaders, including Health Secretary Wes Streeting, are exploring ways to dramatically reduce these numbers by 2029. Building new theatres and outsourcing procedures are often put forward as solutions, but is this the only way? The truth is, we don’t just need to increase capacity by building more – we need to optimise what we already have. The NHS is equipped with a wealth of skilled staff and estate resources. However, many of the theatre teams have been through significant transformation and may now be feeling the effects of change fatigue. That said, there are still opportunities to improve efficiency without overwhelming teams further. This can be achieved by focusing on enhancing processes such as booking systems, optimising session utilisation, and ultimately increasing throughput to get more done within the existing setup. This is where Opfeed, a smart solution developed by RwHealth, can makes a significant difference. Opfeed enables real-time optimisation of theatre utilisation by streamlining scheduling and improving workflow. It’s not about asking teams to do more with less, but about enabling them to make the most of their existing resources. By improving the efficiency of theatre session planning and utilisation, we can make a meaningful dent in waiting times – without exhausting already stretched staff. In essence, Opfeed offers the NHS a way to work smarter, not harder. By helping clinical and administrative teams schedule operations more efficiently, monitor performance, and adjust plans in real time, it helps get the most out of theatre sessions. This doesn’t just help hospitals hit their targets, but ultimately enhances patient care by reducing wait times and improving overall throughput. With the right technology and data-driven approach, we can maximise existing resources, lifting the burden off teams and driving real change. It's time to look beyond building new infrastructure and consider how solutions like Opfeed can transform the NHS today.
