International Civil Aviation Organization, International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) join forces to accelerate SAF production In a significant step towards decarbonising the aviation industry, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) have formed a strategic partnership to boost investment in sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). According to ICAO estimates, approximately $3.2tr in investments will be required for cleaner aviation fuel production alone to achieve the industry’s net-zero emissions goal by 2050. The new partnership will leverage IRENA’s expertise in renewable energy financing and ICAO’s knowledge of the aviation sector to accelerate this process. “This relationship with IRENA enhances our capacity to drive investment and support project implementation, bringing us closer to our environmental goals,” said Juan Carlos Salazar, ICAO secretary general. “At the same time, we continue to work on advancing all aspects of the net zero framework.” #Sustainableaviationfuel #SAF #cleanaviationfuel #biofuel #renewablejetfuel #aviationemissions #decarbonization #climatechange #sustainability #greenaviation #aviationindustry #airlineindustry #aerospaceindustry #energytransition #lowcarboneconomy #greeneconomy #innovation #technology #researchanddevelopment #partnership Read full below. https://lnkd.in/e38Fx4Zb

In this episode of the SAF Podcast, Andrew Symes, Founder & CEO, OXCCU TECH LTD joins Oscar Henderson to dive into the cutting-edge world of e-fuels. A chemistry graduate turned venture capitalist who transitioned to leading a pioneering carbon capture utilization company, Symes discusses OXCCU's groundbreaking catalyst technology that simplifies the conversion of CO2 and hydrogen directly into hydrocarbons. The conversation explores OXCCU's recent milestone: their OX1 demonstration plant, which marks a crucial step in de-risking their innovative single-step conversion process. Symes details how their technology could significantly reduce the CAPEX and OPEX of e-fuel production, potentially solving the cost barrier that currently limits power-to-liquids scaling. The episode also addresses critical sector challenges, including grid electricity demands, the importance of first-of-a-kind facilities in climate tech, and the role of university research in breakthrough innovations. Symes offers valuable insights on the business model evolution from technology development to licensing, and provides a nuanced perspective on UK and EU SAF mandates. The conversation concludes with a pragmatic discussion on offtake agreements and the critical timeline challenges facing the industry as it approaches the 2030 mandate deadlines. SAF Investor reposted this
It was an honor to contribute this article on the SAF situation in Canada, as well as periodic comments on SAF finance issues. In case you were unaware, SAF Investor is a great resource for financial aspects related to SAF. The website is a gold mine of information regarding SAF investment, production, and policy issues and has data that is difficult or immpossible to find elsewhere. The articles are well written and fun to read. I have used the information frequently for studies I have done at SAVIA. In addition, Fayad and his team are very nice people and very easy to work with. Check them out at https://lnkd.in/eW9f2SJA I need to say that the opinions and analysis expressed in this article, or any other of my comments that are quoted in SAF Investor, are entirely my own and do not necessarily represent the views of any companies or organizations that I work with such as SAF+, ICAO, IATA, Project SkyPower, C-SAF, aviation OEM partners, lessors, other consultancies, etc. You can always contact me to discuss if you would like to put your two cents in.
What's up with SAF in Canada, eh? Aviation is essential to Canada, the second largest country in the world, but the sector is also a large contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, generating 22 mega-tonnes in 2019 from domestic and international flights. In addition, emissions are increasing rapidly, up 75% since 2005. To meet this challenge, Canada released an Aviation Action Plan in 2022 that aligns with the ICAO and IATA vision of net-zero by 2050. The plan acknowledges that SAF will be the major decarbonization tool for the aviation sector. To this end, the Canadian aviation industry set an aspirational goal of 10% SAF by 2030, which equates to approximately 1bn liters of fuel. To achieve a long-term goal of net zero emissions by 2050, it is estimated that 8bn liters of SAF will be required. The Iberian Peninsula's emergence as a SAF production hub isn't coincidental. The region boasts abundant feedstock availability, strong agricultural and livestock sectors, ample renewable energy resources, and a robust refining and petrochemical industry. This combination of factors, along with existing market demand, has created an ideal environment for renewable fuel production. Berta Cabello Calvo and Carlos Suarez from Repsol join Oscar Henderson on the podcast this week. These industry leaders provide a deep dive into Repsol's ambitious renewable fuel initiatives, including their refinery in Cartagena and the e-fuel plant planned in Bilbao. This episode offers a glimpse at why Spain and Portugal are becoming powerhouses in the SAF industry, backed by abundant resources and expert industrial capacity. This episode delves into the vital collaboration between producers, airlines, and airports in scaling SAF adoption, while offering insights into overcoming feedstock challenges and maintaining the integrity of renewable fuel supply chains. We also unravel the strategic dynamics of the renewable fuels market, revealing how Spain positions itself uniquely by leveraging less competition and flexible production capabilities. Berta and Carlos highlight the crucial role of institutional support and regulatory frameworks in sustaining global competitiveness. Our discussion underscores the importance of demand-driven projects to meet Repsol's goal of net-zero emissions by 2050, emphasizing the necessity for investment in low-carbon and circular products. The foundation of Repsol's strategy lies in their flexible approach to renewable fuel production. Rather than focusing solely on SAF, they're balancing production across aviation, marine, and road transport sectors. This flexibility aims to allow them to adapt to market demands while maximizing the use of byproducts from the production process. Looking ahead, Repsol appears well-prepared for the initial 2% SAF mandate under RefuelEU. However, they acknowledge the challenges in scaling up to meet the 6% target by 2030, particularly regarding the e-SAF sub-mandate. The company emphasizes the importance of feedstock sustainability and transparency, implementing strict auditing and certification processes to ensure the integrity of their supply chain. https://lnkd.in/eg-FG3qq
