At graduation 10 years ago, I was convinced I would be 'found out' and not awarded my PhD. #Impostersyndrome or ‘growth moments’ to quote @Steve Bartlett… can you relate? Yesterday was graduation day at the University of Surrey, which brought me back to that time when I believed my thesis (or I) might not be good enough and the examiners had made a big mistake. 10 years later as female founder of a tech4good startup, #impostersyndrome is still a thing. According to Deloitte, imposter syndrome affects over 70% people in their lives. But we know that 1 in 7 of us are #neurodivergent. Did you know that the neurodivergent community are even more prone to imposter syndrome due to their unique sensitivities and social needs. What can any of us do to help? Start by enabling neurodivergent individuals through: ✅Normalising differences, ✅Encouraging openness ✅Building #psychologicalsafety ✅Supporting a 360degree approach to inclusion which centres the individual And reframe imposter syndrome as ‘growth moments’ with positive affirmations, enabling us to thrive in safe spaces to be the best version of ourselves. #equity #diversity #inclusion Image description: graduation photographs in academic red/blue robes and interior of Guildford Cathedral

Sometimes you just have to get stuck in … I was going to add more but that sums up my birthday morning today doing the Cancer Research UK (CRUK) 5k @Pretty Muddy… And it applies to all of us Founders … 💪Get stuck in 🏃Keep going 🧘Stay focused on the end goal 😊You never know how it’s going to turn out! We all completed it, didn’t dodge any of the obstacles, it was brilliant fun and we raised a great amount for Cancer Research UK (CRUK). And like a typical Founder, I’d do it all over again! 🤣Thanks girls for the moral support and laughs. Honoured to have been invited to The House of Lords last night for The Vietnam-UK Network Annual Dinner. Privileged to meet distinguished guests and make new international connections discussing optimising #recruitment for #neurodivergent accessibility, #equity, #diversity and #inclusion… and the House of Lords chocolates, what’s not to like! Thank you Colin Glass Image description: four pictures, showing invitation, place setting, chocolate box and myself on the terrace by the Thames

“Can I help you sir?" Is what the customer service attendant at the train station asked me yesterday. ✳️Yes, I’m 6ft ✳️Yes, I was dressed in a grey hoody and jeans ✳️And yes, I was super grumpy about it all day... Even though I know they meant no harm. What happened? Assumptions, that's what. They made a very quick superficial snapshot of me without really looking through the glass counter. Part of me wanted to tell them what I thought, but I didn’t. 😞Because mostly I just wanted to get out of the situation. 😞I felt embarrassed and undermined As always my brain ventured to job interviewing... If we make assumptions upfront about people, we disempower them. Reflecting on an insightful post from Lee Corless last week, companies that avoid assumptions and instead focus on what is possible, are inclusive and inspirational. It’s time that we: ❌Stop making snapshot assumptions ✅Adopt a #universaldesign approach in candidate selection…. Where #inclusivity and #accessibility are built in from the ground up enabling people from different identities, backgrounds abilities and disabilities to be the best version of themselves. ‘C-sections and investment pitches where am I going with this? Today I was very fortunate to win a pitch competition hosted by South East Angels in collaboration with The FSE Group, NatWest and Misfit Founders … never in a million years would I have thought that would happen… pitching is not my favourite thing! Rewind to when I worked as a #Midwife; I really didn’t enjoy assisting at C- Sections but I had to… and for the benefit of the people I was caring for I decided I had to make my self learn to love it.. and I did, infact I got quite good at it. As a start-up founder at Sammi Select I realised very quickly that pitching was an essential part of this job, but I didn’t enjoy it. I decided to adopt the same principles as I did when assisting at C-Section: > #Prepare > #Practise > #Persevere The rewards are amazing; a new baby at C-Section or 'growing my 4th child’ with Sammi Select (for those that don't know, I have 3 children, apologies for the pun). What I’ve learnt: 'if I can, anyone can', the biggest barrier can be your perception of yourself. Great to meet Nick Howe 💙, Paul Zimmerman amongst others today, catch up with old friends Dr Anna Vartapetiance and, thank you to Jake Fox and South East Angels and Matthew Fitchett for the opportunity.
