You will have seen in the news that the government has announced an overhaul of Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) with changes due to come into effect from 1 April 2025. These changes will affect both first-time buyers and those already on the property ladder looking to purchase their next property, with some potential savings for certain groups but increased costs for others. Tim Jordan, partner and director of conveyancing, discusses the changes and what this means for those buying a residential property from 1 April 2025: https://ow.ly/EC7S50VaVBk

Charlie Wood, partner in our employment team, continues to volunteer his time to help students from the University of Chester Law School as part of their Chester Community Law Project. Most recently he attended SPACE Cheshire to assist the students with a presentation aimed at parents who utilise the charity. They discussed key areas of law that may impact the parents including flexible working requests, and holiday and leave rights. The feedback received was very positive and attendees found it useful. If you wish to find out more about the presentation and the law project please get in touch with Charlie: https://lnkd.in/eVBcnYeK

I recently had the pleasure of attending SPACE Cheshire with students from the University of Chester Law School as part of their Chester Community Law Project. The students, Holly and Eleanor Clarke, put together a great presentation covering key topics of employment law - aimed at assisting those with children that have special education needs. I gave some of my time to review the presentation and was there on the day to answer any questions the parents had. Very thankful to the charity for hosting us and I do hope they found it helpful! #SPACECheshire #Chester #UniversityofChester #Charity #CCLP #ProBono

  • Successful co-parenting helps children have a stable upbringing, learn life skills such as flexibility, adaptability and resilience, and feel that both of their parents are equally involved, respected and present in their lives. However, in some situations, co-parenting can be difficult. Whilst most separating parents will agree that the needs of their child must come first, in the throes of a breakup, these good intentions can quickly be forgotten. Claire Porter, partner in our family team, explains co-parenting and shares her top tips to co-parent successfully: https://lnkd.in/eP7xq3BM

  • A recent 5 star review for Leon Gagnon, trainee solicitor in our dispute resolution and litigation team. Our client said they have no ‘hesitation in recommending Leon’ after he helped them with a recent dispute, involving the recovery of a rent deposit and monies which they alleged unjustly enriched their landlord. To read the full review visit our Review Solicitors profile: https://lnkd.in/grwH8KAQ Our dispute resolution team has acted for landlords and tenants in various disputes including disputes over notices under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954, rent deposit schemes, rent arrears, and obtaining possession quickly against problem tenants.

  • Tom Coulson, associate and head of our residential property team based in Macclesfield, spoke to Homebuilding & Renovating about the implications of restrictive covenants and overage if you’re buying a plot of land for a self-build project. Tom explains the difference between them and why you should be well-informed before committing to make sure you can achieve the home you have planned for: https://ow.ly/V2Ss50VhbHF
