Spent the day at the NYSE to listen to BlackBerry’s updates for industry and financial analysts. A few thoughts on the day, especially as it pertains to automotive/automakers: 🌎 BlackBerry’s efforts to make QNX more accessible via non-commercial licensing (dubbed QNX Everywhere) is a step in the right direction in equipping a more capable embedded software development workforce - something that is a major pain point for the broader automotive industry today. 25 poorly trained developers is no substitute for one embedded systems guru! 💵 The clear priority for BlackBerry is extensive investment in its automotive portfolio, which could be a major factor in helping OEMs recover and accelerate #SDV programs that have fallen off the rails. The clear goal is to create a broader ecosystem of software companies that provide a capable foundation for centralized and zonal architectures without compromising on overhead or extensibility. 🙋♂️ My primary concern is the timeframe it will take for these investments to help BlackBerry customers deliver better outcomes through accelerated software programs, better production software quality, and lower program and BOM costs. The industry is entering the 2nd wave of SDV “planning” and both design decisions and program commitments must be made quickly. As vehicle software incumbents like BlackBerry have been working alongside OEMs to adapt their product roadmap to the rapidly changing compute and application software requirements in the car, disruptors can still move faster at scale as they have no legacy/technical debt to manage. Top global volume automakers represent a bigger potential market for BlackBerry as they are more likely to use all the “bells and whistles” of the portfolio while disruptors are more likely to pick and choose components.
