Fun to see the orchids hovering at Queens Botanical Garden for their annual orchid festival! The student-led concept design from the workshops developed into a pretty snazzy tensile canopy strung between the columns of the QBG visitor center. This is a fleeting lightweight structure - here today, gone tomorrow. And also, frustratingly hard to photograph. You had to be there to experience it! Special thanks go to Jeffrey Moser for leading the process of getting this from brain to computer to real life. https://lnkd.in/esS6SsMD

We had a great time running these workshops at QBG! Special shoutout to Grimshaw and their excellent and enthusiastic designers for being part of the Scale Rule fun across two continents, and for 8 years and counting.
In partnership with SCALE RULE and the Queens Botanical Garden, Grimshaw and schlaich bergermann partner sbp hosted a full-day design-build workshop for high school students that are involved in Studio Institute, which is part of the Bloomberg Arts Internship Program. The day included workshops and presentations on architecture and engineering to give the students the background needed to design a structure that met a specific architectural brief. Working in groups of 3-4, the students were tasked with designing a canopy for the outdoor terrace to showcase and support the display of kokedamas and hanging baskets of orchids for the QBG’s annual orchid show. The students presented their concept designs to a jury, and the winning design will be developed and built by the team with help from the students for the Orchid Show in August. In 2022, students in the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science constructed a 24-foot-wide kaleidoscope structure of acrylic, stone, and plywood behind Bernon Hall on South Campus. The structure, titled [re] fractal, has been revived and is now in its second installation at the Queens Botanical Garden. #Hofstra #HofstraU #HofstraUniversity #Engineering #Architecture #Queens #QueensBotanicalGarden #University
