We are excited to share that Via Verde – The Green Way is a finalist for the 2024 Architecture Today Awards for buildings that have stood the test of time. Completed in 2012, Via Verde is a mixed-use, mixed income residential development in the South Bronx that was designed and developed as a prototype project with the intent of applying the inherent sustainability measures to all new public housing in New York City. The design of Via Verde responds to the goals and aspirations articulated in the community meetings, including farming beds, open space, and natural ventilation. The project set a positive example for sustainable urban redevelopment, while integrating into the surrounding community in a way that encourages safe, active street life. Via Verde provided permanent affordable housing for the South Bronx, demonstrating that design innovation, healthy living, and urban renewal are attainable development goals for social housing. Grimshaw Sydney Principal Katarzyna Jurkiewicz presented “Reimagining Places to Live” an update on Grimshaw’s transformative urban design thinking at the Committee for Sydney’s Parramatta Road Summit. The summit included the participation of Government leaders John Graham (State Government Minister for Roads), John Faker GAICD (Burwood Council), Darcy Byrne (Inner West Council), and Clover Moore AO (City of Sydney), among high level representatives from universities, Tech Central partners, planners and infrastructure specialists. Her presentation built on the master planning proposal that Grimshaw, PwC and Mecone - Urban Planning developed for the Committee in 2020 and the experience of the Sydney studio as architectural lead for the Sydney City and Southwest Light Rail project, completed in 2021. The resounding conclusion of the summit was that an ALTRAC Light Rail Consortium proposal to bring Light Rail to connect Parramatta Road to the City’s Green Square is an idea whose time is now.

Working with Arup and 5th Studio, Grimshaw has been appointed to the next stage of design work on Stratford Station in London - one of the UK's key transport hubs and a critical piece of infrastructure for the city - partnering with the London Legacy Development Corporation, Network Rail, Transport for London, Places for London and London Borough of Newham. With the transformational growth of the area since the London 2012 Olympics, this project will address the future capacity of the station and it's integration with Stratford and the surrounding areas, supporting the aims of Newham Council’s Community Wealth Building Strategy. The outcome of this latest stage will be the delivery of an enhanced strategic outline business case and design for the station and its surrounding areas. "Transport hubs today are integral not only to creating sustainable cities and promoting active travel, but also as civic hubs – places that local communities and businesses feel supported by and proud of. We are delighted to be part of the team unlocking, through high quality design, the vision and potential of the station and its surrounding area.” Annelie Kvick Thompson Find out more https://lnkd.in/eb2j9QX3

Noida International Airport in Delhi — with an ambitious net zero philosophy — is progressing well on site. The project will be realised through intelligent passive design, alongside renewable energy sources and on-site photovoltaics and incorporates efficient and lightweight roof structures that have enabled off-site fabrication, quick on-site assembly and low-embodied carbon. Leading the design is Grimshaw, Haptic Architects and Nordic Office of Architecture Norway, working together with YIAPL/Zurich International Airport to create a multi-modal transport hub that, through its layout intuitively supports the interchange and travel function of a terminal building, and connects people within inspired spaces — a park plaza, generous forecourt, and courtyards. Led by the airport’s unique context, these spaces and functions, reflect its location and harnesses the power of light and landscape through the structure, materials and finishes. Flexibility built into the design will also enable the airport to expand in response to the projected growth in aviation. Noida International is bringing forward sustainability and innovation in the aviation sector, and connecting the expertise and experience of a wider design team: Haptic Architects, Grimshaw, Nordic Office of Architecture Norway, Assystem STUP, Urban Systems Design, NACO, Netherlands Airport Consultants, AKT II, SLA, AEON Integrated Building Design Consultants LLP, StudioFractal, Jacobs, Ramboll, COWI + Alan Thompson. The North London Heat and Power Project hits a milestone this month with the opening of the new public recycling facilities. This represents over £150 million investment that secures the new facilities and supports seven boroughs in North London. The project is transforming Edmonton EcoPark into a waste hub for residents as well as creating opportunity for greater community engagement and education about waste and circular economy principles. The design includes north London’s largest solar array, generating 215,000Kwh of energy and will take Eco Park house — a community centre, completing later this year — off-grid. Congratulations to the whole team leading the project: North London Waste Authority, Taylor Woodrow, Arup, Grimshaw, AECOM, VINCI, and WSP. Find out more here → https://lnkd.in/g8vcEnQK
