    It’s been around a week since Gitex Dubai 🌟, and I’ve had some time to reflect on the high-quality conversations I had. They’ve really opened my eyes to how scaleups in the Middle East approach international expansion. And of course, a special mention has to go to the traffic in Dubai, which gave me plenty of time to contemplate the nuances of the Middle Eastern tech ecosystem more than I ever thought possible 😅🚗. 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 - 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 Most Middle Eastern scaleups, especially in the GCC and MENA regions, 🌍tend to expand regionally before going global. Saudi Arabia consistently came up in conversations as one of the top expansion destinations for Middle Eastern scaleups. The shared culture, language, and similar consumer behaviors make this a natural move. The regulatory frameworks across the GCC also make it easier to expand here compared to more fragmented regions. Interestingly, it’s not just intra-region expansion (if that’s even a word!)—there’s also a lot of interest from scaleups in Asia, Europe, and the US in tapping into the Middle Eastern markets. 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 Government support in the region is impressive, with initiatives like Vision 2030 in the UAE and Saudi Arabia driving international growth for local scaleups. 🏢 Beyond incentives, governments provide real resources and direct funding, while public-private partnerships open doors to new markets. Specialised partners like AstroLabs help companies as they land and expand. 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 & 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 Early-stage funding here is significant, with support from sovereign wealth funds like Mubadala Capital and the Public Investment Fund (PIF). This capital enables fast growth, 💰 but there’s an expectation that companies will first dominate their regional markets before going global. The pressure to "own" the region first is real. Luckily, there’s a raft of incubators and accelerators set up to support these burgeoning companies along the way. 𝗛𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 Fintech and sustainability are booming in the region. 🚀 There’s a strong push for cashless economies and digital transformation in financial services, while sustainability is gaining momentum with a focus on clean energy and ESG initiatives. Governments and investors are driving innovation in both sectors, shaping the future of the Middle East.     🌟Reflecting on our recent Singapore-London Scaleup In-Market Mission 🇬🇧🇸🇬 Eight weeks ago, we had the pleasure of hosting a dynamic cohort of Singaporean scaleups 🤝here in the UK organised through our Rainmaking Expand programme. It was an intense week of meetings, sessions and socials. After a bit of a break to re-energise 🚀 we asked the companies what they thought were the biggest benefits from visiting their target market in person: 🌉 Bridging Markets: The mission was all about fostering international expansion and market validation. Being able to attend facilitated productive sessions where each company brought unique perspectives, driving meaningful discussions and collaborations. 🔗 Valuable Connections: Being able to engage with representatives from Enterprise Singapore and the Department for Business and Trade, laying the groundwork for long-lasting partnerships and enhanced brand awareness in the UK. 💼 Tailoring Strategies: Having access to 1:1 market research and marketing sessions emphasizing cultural understanding and localized branding, crucial for resonating with British audiences. 🌐 Cultural Navigation: Interactive sessions on navigating cultural differences provided valuable insights into effectively responding to various UK business scenarios. 🌟 Corporate Collaboration Insights: A highlight was the fireside chat with Felipe Padilla Gomez from #Hitachi, who shared how corporates evaluate and collaborate with scaleups.
