From 11am-3pm there will be lots of talks and activities aimed at secondary school children with an interest in maths. Two of our maths lecturers, William Smyth and Barry Dillon will be there presenting a talk “From Pixels to Predictions” where you can learn how maths is used in AI and what careers need people with maths skills. They’ll also be on hand with information about the history of maths and physics in Ireland, and with information on a new degree programme starting here on the Derry/Londonderry Campus in September 2025 – BSc Hons Computing with Applied Mathematics. While Director of SRUC in Edinburgh, he helped set up their very successful Carbon Management Centre. 🎓 AICC academics and Thales IAS are collaborating on an exciting PhD project to advance cutting-edge research in Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI), addressing the critical need for trust and transparency in AI systems. This PhD project aims to develop a taxonomy of XAI methods, evaluate their application in AI/ML models, and design a use-case-specific AI/ML model with integrated and verified XAI components.
