Both Scottish Forestry and Ireland’s Department of Agriculture are working collaboratively together on precautionary forestry measures following the finding of three Ips cembrae beetles (commonly known as the large larch bark beetle) in a trap in Passage West port in Cork.  Until further investigations have been carried out, a precautionary pause is now in place preventing all conifer timber with bark on being transported to Ireland from Scotland’s west coast Pest Free Area.  Full story: https://lnkd.in/eHiAXxHF #treehealth #shipping #beetle #forestry #conifer Confor: Confederation of Forest Industries (UK) Scottish Land & Estates

A very informative morning spent with Moray Council's Councillors who were finding out more about the contribution the forestry sector makes to the local economy as they prepare their own woodland strategy. We had some superb talks and visits to James Jones & Sons Ltd at Mosstodloch and with Will Anderson at Seafield Estate. Many thanks to all those who were involved. Scottish Forestry's Grampian Conservancy was very pleased to get everyone together. #teameffort #forestry #economy #woodlandstrategy #engagement

Take advantage of a very user friendly way of getting to grips with the new UKFS…..the e-learning programme. 👇 👇

Whether you are just starting out in the sector or an experienced professional, the new fifth edition of the UK Forestry Standard will be essential reading. The new UKFS e-learning programme helps bring the standard to life, breaking the content down into more accessible chunks, interspersed by videos and interactive elements. Keith Wishart FICFor, Scottish Forestry Conservator for Central Scotland, said: “I would thoroughly recommend that experienced foresters and those early on in their professional careers take advantage of this e-learning that’s available.   There’s a lot to take in on version five of the UKFS but this new e-learning programme is making it more accessible and user friendly. It’s a great way to raise standards in our profession and increase learning opportunities for a wider range of people.” Sign up today to access the course content in your own time and in your own way: https://lnkd.in/giBNy-4N

Scottish Forestry is co-funding this interesting #PHD opportunity with University of Glasgow and Sonichem. There are a number of research areas to explore. We are particularly keen to see the PhD carried out as it will contribute to our on-going work to maximise the value of wood fibre in forests of the future, as well as potentially creating novel, sustainable products to support and advance decarbonisation ambitions across a wide range of sectors. Delivering new levels of environmental, ecological and economic performance for Scotland

PhD in Chemistry - Bridging the Gap Between Biomass and Sustainable Chemicals Markets for bio-derived products that displace petrochemical alternatives continues to grow as consumers and businesses demand greener, more sustainable products, and producers seek to reduce their carbon footprints and environmental impacts. This project, which has been developed through collaboration between University of Glasgow, Sonichem and Scottish Forestry will explore new value for wood fibre through two key pathways: 1. Assessing and characterising various types of woody biomass from different tree species and from different locations and harvest periods to see what impact these factors have on lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose properties. 2. Working with Sonichem to investigate the fractionation of various biomass streams using their patented ultrasonic fractionation technology and exploring the chemical properties of the products. Overall, this project will deliver real-world impacts with the aim of replacing fossil-derived chemicals with sustainable, renewable, high-performance bio-derived alternatives.
