Why this is the best John Lewis & Partners collection I’ve seen. Quality over quantity, nailing the high street by the sounds of it! 💡 It’s also now channelling the high-low mix that has become another defining feature of contemporary fashion. The woman who shops at John Lewis does not necessarily have an everywoman budget. It recently sold a vintage Chanel handbag, part of its hook-up with the specialist operation Sign of the Times, for a punchy £4,700. Its latest hire is Rachel Morgans as director of fashion. Formerly of Asos and Finery, among other brands, she joined in June. What’s new for Morgans, she tells me, is “the emotional connection our customers feel with John Lewis. Evolution! Marks and Spencer to trial shops selling only clothes and not food. The standalone store — which will be branded simply “Marks & Spencer” — will open in London’s Battersea Power Station this autumn. It will stock a slimmed-down range of women’s and menswear, weighted towards M&S’s premium lines, as well as a range of beauty products. Total clothing and homeware sales rose by 5.3 per cent to £3.9 billion in the year to March. The division, which is run by former Tesco clothing boss Richard Price, generated an underlying operating profit of £402.8 million. One pound in every ten that Brits spend on clothes is spent at M&S. Shares in M&S have risen by 56 per cent to 335.9p over the past year, valuing the retailer at £6.89 billion.
