As part of our International Women’s Day celebrations, we hosted the Insights into Independents at the Jefferies office in London. The day was filled with valuable career insights into working at independent banks, achieving work-life balance, the importance of networking, navigating the industry by understanding various roles and mastering the application process. We extend our gratitude to Aditi Venkatram for opening the Insights event with inspiring and motivating insights into her career journey and the banking industry. Our panellists - Fran Tew, Charlotte Edgar, Becky Heard, Xue Xian Lee, Cristina Forcina Westermann, Alexandra Loth, Sophia Rodriguez, Megan Gresham and Annemijn Bijlsma - fuelled students' ambition by sharing examples of breaking stereotypes. Additionally, they conducted interactive activities to debunk some common banking myths and provided solutions to real-life work-related problems and case studies. Thank you to Janet Harbison, for concluding the event with top tips and valuable insights into the technical knowledge of the banking industry. A massive thank you to Jefferies for supporting us in hosting Insights into Independents at their London office once again. We also thank the firms that joined the networking session: Lazard, Houlihan Lokey, PJT Partners ,Ardea Partners, Moelis & Company and Rothschild & Co. Offering a unique opportunity to understand and experience the intersection between hospitality and real estate, students got to hear about the history of the hotel, its plans for expansion and what it takes to run such a successful brand. Happy International Women’s Day 2025! 💜 This year’s theme, #AccelerateAction, is a powerful call to move beyond conversations and drive real, lasting change for gender equality. We asked some of our team members what this theme means to them, and their responses were inspiring. It’s about breaking barriers, creating opportunities, and ensuring that women’s voices are heard. Today, we celebrate the achievements of women everywhere and recognise the progress still to be made. Let’s keep pushing forward together! 𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧’𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐈 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰: 𝐦𝐲 𝐒𝐲𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫. This is not just a story about my mother, but about many Syrian mothers who braved 14 years of war. The conflict began with a revolution and ended in the total collapse of political and economic structures, causing immense hardship for millions of Syrian families. However, this is a story of hope and strength. Maha Kabbani, a single mother from a Christian minority background, not only survived but thrived despite the crushing weight of war. One day, under bombardment, Maha began writing as a coping mechanism. She wrote poetry and literature about love, hope and the challenges women face in Syrian society. She bravely addressed issues related to oppression, the stigma around women's sexuality, freedom and the desire for independence. Amidst the turmoil, she managed to get published, not once, but three times. When times were tough for me as part of the Syrian diaspora, my mother was always there to reassure me, even when things were far from being fine. As a free man living in the West, my mother has been a source of strength and light at the end of a long, dark tunnel. I carry her strength with me everywhere I go, and here are six valuable lessons she taught me: ☑ 𝐁𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥; it’s the only way to be. ☑ 𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧; the rest is noise. Being at peace with ourselves is the greatest gift we can give ourselves. ☑ 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐩𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐨𝐟𝐟. Even if we don't see immediate results, we grow as individuals through hard work, and that’s invaluable. ☑ 𝐀𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝. The low road does the biggest disservice to us before others. ☑ 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐧. Even having coffee and listening to music in the morning is a celebration of life. ☑ 𝐍𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐬 because the ripple effect of our values is the only thing that truly lasts long after we’re gone. After the collapse of the brutal dictatorship, many Syrian mothers are still searching for their family members, many of whom perished in the conflict, in underground prisons, in torture camps and as a result of bloody sectarian violence. To my own and all Syrian mothers, you are a symbol of courage to all women around the world. 𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧’𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐞𝐬! #internationalwomensday #IWD #thrivinginthechaos #womenheros #syrianconflect #motherheros #writer #author #myhero #inspiringwomen
