About us
Social Enterprise Yorkshire and the Humber is a not for private profit company established to represent, promote and drive forward the development of the social enterprise sector in Yorkshire and the Humber. What SEYH believes: Social enterprises have a significant role to play in improving local economies and delivering change within communities whilst supporting people into employment. That the members of SEYH will provide the drive and leadership for the Social Enterprise community. Social enterprises are wonderful but they are not a universal panacea that works in every community and meets every need. There are plenty of enterprise advisors in the system and we need to build capacity within social enterprises rather than without. Social Enterprises are members of the small business family facing many of the same challenges whilst attempting to respond to market opportunities as they arise. Social Enterprises are wealth generators focussing on sustainable development and the redistribution of profit for delivering social aims including the employment of individuals more remote from the labour market.

Really grateful to the team at 21 Degrees Digital for letting me work from their office today. Working alone can be really isolating and it's so good to be sat in an office surrounded by people. What makes it even more special are dogs are allowed in the office so I get cuddles as well. #SocialEnterprise #Support #DogsatWork

Great stuff from member Enterprise Works at the University of York
Breaking Barriers, Unlocking Potential This International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating more than just the incredible achievements of women in business—we’re taking action to shape a future where female entrepreneurs in York & North Yorkshire have the support, resources, and networks they need to thrive. Recent research, developed in partnership with the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), highlights a huge opportunity: by addressing the challenges women face in entrepreneurship, our region could generate up to 165,000 jobs and boost GVA by £2.6 billion. That’s why leaders from York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, City of York Council, NatWest, Barclays, Lloyds Banking Group, and HSBC have come together to drive forward real change. We are working to create a seamless, inclusive business support ecosystem—one that removes barriers and empowers women to start, grow, and scale their businesses. What’s Next? 🔹 A regional programme to support female entrepreneurs is in development, launching in Summer 2025. 🔹 Priorities include: integrated business support, mentorship, confidence-building, marketing, and advocacy. 🔹 The goal? A connected, thriving environment where more women can succeed in business. Our research found that: 🔸 There are 23,562 fewer self-employed women than men in York & North Yorkshire 🔸 94% of female-led businesses are microbusinesses 🔸 63% of girls never considered entrepreneurship as a career option 🔸 57% of women say the mental load of balancing life and business holds them back Professor Kiran Trehan, who spearheaded the research said "We’ve taken a bold step forward in shaping a future where female entrepreneurs in York & North Yorkshire have the support, resources, and networks they need to thrive. By working together, we are building a regional programme that will break down barriers, unlock economic potential, and drive meaningful change” This International Women’s Day, we are not just celebrating—we are committing to real change. If you want to be part of shaping this future, let’s connect. Find out more here: https://bit.ly/437kGNP #IWD2025 #YorkshireWomenInBusiness #FemaleEntrepreneurs #BreakingBarriers #EconomicGrowth
