It was a busy first SHOESDAY of this years STEPTEMBER campaign for Shoe Aid and donations of footwear continue to come in. The footwear we are processing we are sending out following requests from schools, charity organisations and community groups up and down the country. There is a place where thousands of men, women, and children wear footwear that is not fit for purpose. And at least 280,000 homeless people (10,000 living on the streets) have no shoes or shoes that are falling to pieces, and that place is the UK. Shoe Aid is a national charity based here in the UK who source and supply free footwear through a collection and distribution network, so no child or adult need go without shoes. In September Shoe Aid will once again be launching STEPTEMBER. We want to raise awareness of the issue of footwear poverty and get people to focus on the challenges and impact it has. In September this year, there are four Tuesdays, each of these days we are asking people to organise events to raise awareness of footwear poverty, that’s four opportunities to take part, everyone can take part in one or all of the days, which we are calling SHOESDAYS. Rather than have a badge or ribbon or other icon we want to ask people to wear ODD SHOES for one or all the SHOESDAYS. They can also wear NO SHOES. Sharing images from these events/days across social media should help raise the issues of footwear poverty. People will not be limited to NO SHOES or ODD SHOES; we are looking for people to be creative too. We would like people to help headline the issues and challenges of footwear poverty here in the UK. Shoe Aid relies on footwear donations to deliver its service to those in need. We ensure all our footwear is ‘Fit for Purpose’ and donate new and used items ‘Free of Charge’. Whilst the service is ‘Free’ Shoe Aid is not free to operate. Poverty of any kind is not voluntary, part-time or weekends only, Shoe Aid has volunteers who help sort and clean donated footwear in readiness. However, to help more people and organisations – Shoe Aid needs to operate ‘Full Time’ to meet the needs and demands of men, women, children and families who don’t have suitable footwear and be part of everyday life. As well as shoe/footwear donations we are asking for monetary donations to support Shoe Aids work. This would be (voluntary) £3 from each person who wears ODD SHOES or NO SHOES or donates items or footwear. People and organisations could also have competitions, quizzes (footwear themed) to raise funds for Shoe Aid and footwear poverty. We have a nickname for our collection units we call them Daleks - we designed them to be used for bulk collections and indoor and outdoor events so Footwear can be donated accordingly. The Daleks had their maiden voyage this weekend on duty collecting used and fit for purpose footwear during a triathlete event at Home Pierrepoint Nottingham organised by outlaw triathlon. Every day we get requests to supply/donate school shoes/footwear replacing footwear (as in the picture attached here, a pair of shoes being worn by a pupil), so every child can put their best foot forward! Another year draws to a close at Shoe Aid, we’ve have broken all previous records in terms of donations in and donations out. Why that might be something to celebrate in terms of achievement. On reflection it is an indicator of just how difficult it has been for many families and individuals up and down the country. Shoe Aid will continue to support men, women and children with the challenges that may lay ahead in 2024 As a charity we have been overwhelmed with the support we have received from the retail, wholesale and manufacturing industry, as this year alone, we have received an excess of 100,000 pairs of brand-new footwear, please keep supporting us and help change more lives (school shoes, trainers, football boots). Shoe Aid also had the privilege of being part of a world record achievement for the amount of trainers/sneakers cleaned simultaneously by individuals. Lara Oyedele former president of the Chartered institute of housing chose Shoe Aid as her charity to support during her term in office. The mayor of Clitheroe also chose Shoe Aid as a joint charity to benefit from events being held in the Clitheroe area. Or humbled thanks for raising funds and the profile of Shoe Aid An army of independent retailers supported our work throughout 2023, donating new shoes as well providing a drop off for the general public to make donations. APPEAL for donations of football boots/Astroturf trainers. Every week we receive a growing number of requests for football boots and trainers from across the country to support families and their children, which would allow them to take part in sport and have a feeling of inclusion. Right now there are thousands of young people who can’t access the right Footwear and be part of something that most of us take for granted, taking part in the sport they love. Shoe Aid is supporting hundreds of families this week and next week and the week after that with fit for purpose footwear to not only attend school, but to take part in sport, and enjoy being part of a team. If you are a wholesaler, retailer, football club or manufacturer of sport shoes, football boots and trainers and can help support Shoe Aid and make a difference to hundreds of lives, then please get in touch. As long as they are fit for purpose, in a usable condition then they will be of great help. DON'T dispose, re-purpose, and eliminate waste.
