A few years ago, I spoke about predatory marriage at STEP global Congress and I’m sad to say that I’ve seen a marked rise in cases of financial abuse since then. I am honoured to have been asked to be a spokesperson for STEP’s own campaign on this subject. Anything we practitioners can do to raise awareness and find solutions is invaluable. #mentalcapacity #financialabuse #law
Today STEP is launching ‘Spot the signs’, a new global campaign to raise awareness of the warning signs of financial abuse among people who have loved ones who may be at risk. This campaign stems from a key finding in STEP’s 2023 report on mental capacity, ‘Loss of Mental Capacity: A Global Perspective’: the majority of members had seen actual or suspected abuse of vulnerable people. It can be hard to spot the signs of financial abuse so we have produced resources focusing on the signs to look out and action people can take. Please share this post to raise awareness of this important campaign among other practitioners and with clients so vulnerable people can be protected. Thank you to all those involved in this campaign including the Mental Capacity Special Interest Group (SIG) Steering Committee: Yue-En Chong TEP, Martina Moscardi TEP, Darren Catton TEP, Holly V.A. Cunliffe, J.D., T.E.P., Sheree Green TEP, Martin Haanen TEP, Anna Kamateros TEP, Karen Perreira LL.B (Hons) TEP CAMS FCIArb, Leah Sewell TEP and Kimberly Whaley, TEP, CS, LLM. We also thank our campaign spokespeople: Heledd Wyn TEP, Louise Lewis TEP and SIG Steering Committee member Holly Mieville-Hawkins TEP. In addition we would like to thank all the STEP members who have shared their expertise in checking the accuracy of information about Powers of Representation (e.g. Lasting or Enduring Powers of Attorney) in various countries across the world.
