In this new era of equity, inclusion, and wellbeing, it's crucial to truly know your teams. You cannot foster equity and inclusion if you do not take the time to listen to your people and their needs. Louisa Davies planned her exit from her previous role because being a single parent and working some days from 6am until the wee hours with minimal breaks, days on end, was robbing her of precious time. The almost two hour commute to and from the office was becoming exasperating. Her team was reduced to just her, causing immense stress and low energy, with no gain or benefit of taking on the extra workload. Ultimately, her daughter and her health were just far more important to her. Leaders - Are you ensuring your teams workloads are manageable? Are you collaboratively refining ways of working with those who do the job day to day? Are you offering autonomy or are you micromanaging, adding layers of reporting and ‘1-2-1’s that aren’t needed? Do you consider people’s time spent travelling, commuting, taking the kids to and from school? Are you offering flexible working arrangements wherever possible? Or, are you a little archaic…’doing things the way they’ve always been done’ 🙄 #Excuses Yes, there are many things to know in order to be a truly equitable and inclusive leader, and this takes time and commitment, but it's not worth losing valuable team members because they’re too worried to ask for reasonable adjustments or you won’t consider their needs because you fear speaking up for your team members, or trying something new. Top Tips to Ensure Your Teams Feel Safe to Ask for Reasonable Adjustments: 1. Open Communication Channels: Create a culture where open dialogue is encouraged. Regularly check in with your team members and make it clear that their wellbeing is a priority. 2. Flexible Working Arrangements: Offer and promote flexible working options. Ensure that everyone knows they can request adjustments that help them balance work and personal life wherever possible. Remember as a leader you have a level of discretion. 3. Confidential Support: Provide access to confidential support services. Let your team know that their requests for adjustments will be handled discreetly and with respect. Today is THE BIG DAY. Not because it’s Fourth of July. Not because it’s Independence Day… Not because it’s Voting Day… It’s SISU’s fourth ruddy birthday people 🪩🎉🍾🥂 Four years ago a series of conversations unfolded between Olajide Alabi and Louisa Davies that would change their lives forever more… They dreamed of uniting their own talents and skills in ways that would in turn help unite people, teams and businesses throughout the land. They made a promise to themselves and each other that they would make every effort to make people feel safe, seen and heard. So they set out on their quest with Stoic Determination to encourage a positive culture shift amongst the communities they were blessed enough to meet along their journey. They were Brave in their mission, facing many a moment where they felt as though they were just about surviving in the chaotic realm of business owners. At times, they had to be brutally Honest with themselves in asking “Can we really do this?” But their creativity and uniqueness sparked Curiosity amongst people and brands alike. The passion within their hearts, the courage in their backbones and integrity in their DNA kept them pursuing their dreams and their vision. The support of those Curious folk, the ones wanting to be better, the ones doing better, gave them hope, lighting the way. And so here they are Louisa Davies and Olajide Alabi journeying through life as themselves and SISU, continuing to do what they love best…helping others. As June fades and the vibrant Pride flags 🏳️🌈 come down, it's crucial to remember that the fight for equality and inclusion doesn't end with the close of Pride Month. At SISU, we believe that the recognition and celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community must be a year-round commitment. In July, Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Trans 🏳️⚧️, and Queer individuals are still here, living their truths and navigating a world that often tries to silence 🤫 them. Pride is more than a month-long celebration; it's an ongoing movement demanding #visibility, #representation, and #SystemicChange. It's about recognising the unique challenges the #LGBTQIA+ community faces and actively working towards a more inclusive society. We must continue to push for changes in government policies that protect and uplift LGBTQIA+ individuals. Safe spaces are essential for the wellbeing of the community, where everyone can express their identities without fear of discrimination or violence. This is not just about tolerance; it's about genuine acceptance and support. The rainbow washing may disappear, but the need for #advocacy remains. As we dismantle one layer of inequality, we must continue to fight until every person, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, feels safe and valued. To quote the great Maya Angelou, "Until we are all free, we are none of us free." This powerful reminder underlines the importance of collective liberation and the ongoing work needed to achieve true equity.
