  • Did you know C4 plastic explosive has a very similar molecular density to certain cheeses? By mapping the unique ‘fingerprints’ of different materials using the scatter pattern of diffracted rays, X-ray Diffraction (XRD) confidently distinguishes between threats, contraband and everyday items.   This precise approach makes it particularly suitable for automatically resolving alarms generated by EDS systems at Level 1. Automating up to 80% of Level 2 decisions is a game-changer for operations constantly under pressure to screen large volumes quickly and efficiently – e.g. multi-level baggage handling and fast-forwarding small parcels and mail.   Inconsistencies in shape, form and physical characteristics when drugs are cut with other substances, make narcotics detection very complex. XRD ‘fingerprint’ technology also delivers a highly accurate and automated new option for customs checkpoints. #XRayDiffraction #AdvancedDetection #CustomsCheckpoints #AutomatedScreening #EDSTechnology

  • Smiths Detection has successfully installed an HCVT rail cargo inspection system in the United States, enhancing the nation's ability to screen rail cargo for dangerous or illegal items. The HCVT is a high-energy, side-view X-ray inspection solution capable of penetrating over 12 inches (300 mm) of steel, effectively scanning single or double-stacked containers at normal operating speeds. This system can scan up to 300 containers in 10 minutes, significantly increasing the efficiency of cargo inspections. It integrates with Customs networks and other HCV systems, enabling remote analysis, image comparison, and knowledge sharing among homeland security agencies. The deployment of the HCVT system underscores Smiths Detection's commitment to providing advanced security solutions that facilitate efficient and effective cargo screening to enhance border security and trade operations.

  • 🛡️Security Technology Must Move Faster   From explosives to cyber-attacks and biological agents, the threats facing the aviation industry are evolving alarmingly. In response, security technology must advance even faster. The future lies in data-driven, risk-based decisions, utilising integrated sensors and devices from multiple suppliers. The key to this approach is open architecture and wide area networks (WANs) to enable rapid data sharing across any distance.   Dr. Juergen Kappler, Portfolio Director, Aviation & Critical Infrastructure - explains the importance of such advanced technologies in enhancing airport security.
