We had a fun and restorative Snowball team away day at Kent Wildlife Trust this week. Sevenoaks Wildlife Reserve is the first UK example of a gravel pit site being developed for nature conservation. This restored former quarry is leased to Kent Wildlife Trust under a long term agreement for the benefit of wildlife and enjoyment of all. The pioneering lake and woodlands site is a haven for birds, and as well as dragonflies and damselflies there is also a diverse community of plants, fungi and other wildlife, including bats and glow-worms. So far well over two thousand species have been identified and more are regularly being added to the list. Alice, our guide from Kent Wildlife Trust’s Wilder Wellbeing team, designed a morning of mindfulness and nature connection for us - including pond dipping! For the first time, the The Global Impact Investing Network published a list of #impactinvesting organisations that — unlike its previous aggregated research — includes specific data from named firms. This provides an overview of the impact sector globally. Alongside the Snowball fund, we are delighted many of our investees are also listed, including Big Issue Invest, Bridges Fund Management Ltd., Community Investment Management, The Lyme Timber Company, Resonance Limited, responsAbility Investments AG, Wellington Management, WHEB. Impact investors seek companies whose principal purpose is making a measurable positive #impact alongside financial #returns. Based on data tracking investment activity over the past five years, including by organisations on the list, the GIIN says that the allocation of assets to impact strategies has increased at a compound annual growth rate of 14 per cent in that period. What is the Circular Economy? It is a generic term for an industrial economy that is, by design, restorative and in which component and material flows are of two types: - Biological nutrients, designed to re-enter the biosphere safely; and - Technical nutrients or assets, which are designed to circulate at high quality (without entering the biosphere). A #circulareconomy aims to ‘design out’ waste. Waste does not exist—products are designed and optimised to re-enter the economy whilst maintaining maximum value. The circular economy outlines a set of enabling system conditions and provides a framework for the transformation of the economy through the restoration of eco-system services, shift to renewable energy, elimination of waste and pollution and increased resilience of financial and labour markets. In 2021, the 300 largest foundations in the UK gave away a record £3.7 billion to charities and individuals in need. That money had a huge impact on the world. But what of the other £87bn of assets that those foundations controlled through their charitable endowments? What impact did those assets have? And more importantly, what impact could they have had?
