BMW Group has made €10,000 donation to Sobell House through The Karl-Monz Foundation. 🚗 Dr. Markus Grüneisl, Managing Director of Plant Oxford, and his team were instrumental in securing the generous donation. Markus and the MINI manufacturing plant are ongoing supporters of the hospice and were a key partner for OxTrail, which took over the city last summer. Thank you so much for your ongoing support!

About us
For 45 years, Sobell House Hospice has been providing specialist palliative care to adults with advanced, progressive illnesses and supporting families facing loss. Each year, we provide more than 3,000 people in Oxfordshire with the care they need on our ward, in our day centre, in the local hospitals and in the community. Thanks to the support from our community, we are able to offer a wide range of services tailored to each individual’s needs. In addition to day-to-day care, we offer music and art therapy, complimentary therapy, onsite catering, a transport service, occupational therapy and spiritual support. We also extend our care to offer bereavement support to families who have lost a loved one at Sobell House. Our expert teams take the time to get to know each patient and their individual needs as we accompany them and their families on what is undoubtedly the most difficult journey they will ever make. Our focus is on the here and now – from offering our patients their favourite tipple from the drinks trolley, to helping them get married – we want to make every precious moment count. At the end of life, we give our patients a peaceful and dignified end, surrounded by their loved ones. The care and support we provide costs money; £5.6 million per year. The Charity fundraises to contribute £2 million annually, so we are reliant on the generosity and support of our local community to ensure we can continue to provide our standard of care.

We're proud to announce the launch of the "This is Hospice Care" campaign, a groundbreaking collaboration between 143 hospices, brought together by Hospice UK. Hospices are at the very heart of communities, offering compassionate care and support when we need it most. But just as this incredible support wouldn't exist without hospices across the UK, hospice care wouldn't exist without the incredible generosity of their local communities. That's why we’ve brought hospices together to shine a light on the essential role they play in our communities and to protect their futures. We're asking everyone to consider leaving a Gift in their Will to a hospice close to their heart. By doing so, you can help ensure that everyone has the support they need for generations to come. Together, we can make sure that hospice care lives on for all, for now, forever. https://lnkd.in/dppajFb8

You may have heard of our community palliative care team, but underpinning this vital service are the unsung heroes of our Hospice Hub team! Meet Maria, a Specialist Nurse and Hub Team Coordinator who has worked at Sobell House for four years. ✨ Maria has sat down with us and told us a little more about her role… ‘ The Hub team provides support and advice to patients and their families, as well as GPs, district nurses, and other health and care professionals. Our job is to help coordinate a patient’s care to ensure they receive the best possible support, and give them practical help with distressing symptoms, such as pain, nausea, breathlessness, and constipation. Each day starts with a check in meeting with the clinical teams covering the inpatient, hospital, and community services. This enables us to check the capacity each area has for the day and which beds are available. We discuss any patients who won’t be admitted as an inpatient, and how we plan to support them over the next 24 hours. Following this, we have a Hospice Outreach meeting to discuss the patients that are symptomatically unstable and require a daily review either by phone or through a home visit. Within the Hospice Outreach team we have occupational therapists, physios, specialist nurses, a specialist registrar, and a consultant. This enables us to provide a holistic review of the patient to meet their needs more effectively and quickly. Calls come into the Hub and are answered by our amazing coordinators, who log the call on the digital message board for the three Hub nurses to respond to. We receive about 40 calls, 50 emails, and 2-3 urgent referrals every day. The calls we deal with are varied, and can take anything from 5 to 60 minutes – it’s important to us to give people as much time as they need. We strongly encourage patients…’ Continue reading 👉 https://lnkd.in/dd-3_vdt

Miriam received support from Sobell House for 18 months, following a diagnosis of motor neurone disease. She died at home in January 2021. Her husband, Andrew, has kindly shared their experience. ❤️ “Mim was a nurse. A very, very good one. 15 years in hospital then another 15 in general practice. She knew everything there was to know. And she was a stern judge of nurses. She was not disappointed. To my shame I can’t remember if Lisa, the Sobell House nurse who supported Mim, was one of the people we met at the initial appointment with Sobell House. I will never forget what she did for us later”. Continue reading 👉 https://lnkd.in/egDg9Cyp

Tom, our Music Therapist, gave one patient living with a rare brain tumour the chance to feel like themselves again through the power of music. Tom has told us a little more 👇 “As the Music Therapist here at Sobell House, I see time and time again how music can unlock precious memories, instantly transporting someone back to the associated experience, place, or person, which can often lead to life review work. Over the last year, I worked with a patient called Grace* who had a rare brain tumour and needed help with daily activities. Getting out of bed, washing and dressing, eating and drinking all needed the assistance of her husband and a team of carers. Each week I would make a home visit for our music therapy sessions, and during these sessions we would simply sing through some of her favourite songs, each one filled with memories of her life. Her husband and carers would join us – along with visitors and neighbours at times – to help sing these songs. Singing was something that Grace could still do herself, that didn’t need to be done for her or to her. She had agency and autonomy, and singing allowed her access to these cherished moments of her life. By October, Grace’s health had deteriorated, and she was needing more medical assistance. She was now more fatigued and less able to engage in our music making. The last time I saw her, she was bedbound and less responsive, but her husband was keen that we sing through some of her favourite songs as usual, confident that she could still hear us. We were joined around Grace’s hospital bed by her carer and sister, who was visiting at the time, and sang through some of her favourite songs that we knew would be most familiar to her. I sensed that we were all aware time was short now and little more could be done, but in that moment, we could still sing, still do something ‘normal’, something positive that we had done together throughout the year. It was a privilege to support Grace and her family.” Did you know that our art and music therapy service is entirely funded through donations?
