We congratulate Ade Adepitan MBE on his appointment as the new Chancellor of Birmingham City University. The television presenter, journalist, disability advocate, and Paralympic champion, who was part of the Great Britain wheelchair basketball team that secured bronze at the 2004 Athens Games, will assume his new role at the end of 2024, succeeding Sir Lenny Henry. Ade Adepitan MBE said: "It’s an honour to be taking over from the legendary Sir Lenny Henry, who has always been a hero of mine. I’m extremely passionate about the power of education to uplift people from working class backgrounds and minority groups, so this feels like a dream appointment. I’m also looking forward to becoming fluent in Brummie before the end of my tenure.” The Vice-Chancellor of Birmingham City University, Professor David Mba, FREng PFHEA said: “Anyone who has ever met Ade will see his enormous passion for education and for inclusion. This is a brilliant appointment for BCU. Vacancy closing on Friday! The Open University is recruiting for an Executive Dean, Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The candidate will be enabling the university’s strategic mission by taking the lead in defining the future of The Open University and helping lead the institution through a period of profound change and development. As the Executive Dean of STEM, you’ll be accountable for the strategic leadership and management of the Faculty. The successful candidate will be appointed to a permanent substantive role in the Faculty and seconded to the Executive Dean position. The appointment period for the Executive Dean position is for a maximum of five years, with possible reappointment for a further two years subject to the agreement of the Executive Dean and the Vice-Chancellor. The Executive Dean has responsibility for the strategic leadership and management of the Faculty. They are the chief academic officer and, as head of a significant business unit, are accountable to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor in respect of its overall management and financial performance. The Executive Dean is a member of the Vice-Chancellor’s Executive Team (VCE), contributing to the University’s strategic direction and leading its implementation in the Faculty. They are also a member of VCE-Academic, the executive management group that ensures alignment between academic strategy and implementation. They therefore play a pivotal role in the management and governance of the University. It is the responsibility of the Executive Dean to ensure that the Faculty provides high quality and innovative courses and teaching, an excellent student experience, and research and knowledge exchange managed to high standards of quality and sustainability. The Executive Dean represents the Faculty both within the University and externally. We congratulate Advocate Bience Gawanas, former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, on her appointment as the new Chancellor of The University of Warwick. Advocate Bience Gawanas is a Namibian Lawyer, Diplomat, and Social Justice Advocate. She was a former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations. She served as Special Adviser on Africa for the United Nations from 2018 to 2020. She was Commissioner for Social Affairs at the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government, from 2002 to 2012. She also served as a Commissioner on the Public Service Commission in Namibia from 1991 to 1996, and an Ombudswoman in the Namibian Government from 1996 to 2003. She has also been a Lecturer in Gender Law at the University of Namibia, Director of the Board of the Central Bank of Namibia, and involved in many non-governmental organizations including Secretary-General of the Namibian National Women's Organization and patron of Namibian Federation of Persons with Disabilities. As Chairperson of the Law Reform Commission she oversaw the passage of the Married Persons' Equality Act. With her role commencing in January 2025, Bience will serve as the ceremonial head of the University of Warwick, presiding over major events, including graduation ceremonies, and acting as an ambassador for Warwick's principles of academic excellence, diversity, and social impact.
