  • Start-ups drive economic growth and sustainable solutions for the UK 📈🌟 While studying for her PhD at the University of Bath, Dr (Helen) Jinghui Liang met her LabCycle co-founders at a three-day start-up programme where they went on to tackle the problem of plastic waste deriving from lab-discarded single-use plastic. Earlier this week, UUK Head of Innovation Policy Greg Wade highlighted the crucial role universities play in fostering entrepreneurial talent at Bath’s Enterprise Day. 💬 ‘Up and down the UK, universities are inspiring and developing the next generation of entrepreneurs. We want politicians, business leaders, students and parents to know how committed universities are to equipping staff and students with the skills and support needed to turn ideas and ambition into tangible, valuable products and services.’ Read more about Dr Liang’s start-up story here: https://loom.ly/y1hxrpo #UnisStartUpTheUK

    Chocolate Maker at Bullion

Last night I had the pleasure of attending Universities UK event at the UK House of Lords It was great to celebrate the impact universities have across our economy. I was there to champion the support I recieved from Sheffield Hallam University in the start-up phase of Bullion Chocolate. When you start a business, it can often be a lonely road. You’ll have lots of questions, and nowhere to turn. I was fortunate that I was able to access Hallam’s graduate support scheme. Connecting me with my mentor Morgan Killick, accessing resources and surrounding myself with likeminded individuals. I look back at those years and they were some of the best! Building a business from nothing, and Sheffield Hallam University were there to hold my hand along the way. Great to meet Brian Walmsley Jinghui Liang Ken Pearce Sebastian Gordon - what an event!

🚀 Honored to be invited to parliament for the UUK Chancellors Reception at the House of Lords! 🚀 Yesterday, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Universities UK Chancellors Reception, hosted by Lord David Willetts where leaders from education, government, and business gathered to discuss the impact of universities on entrepreneurship and economic growth. 🎤 I had the pleasure of listening to some truly inspiring speakers, including: ✅ Lord Willetts – President of the UK Space Agency and former Minister for Universities & Science ✅ Professor Sally Mapstone FRSE – President of Universities UK & Principal of the University of St Andrews ✅ Dr Beenish Siddique Siddique – CEO & Founder of AEH Innovative Hydrogel, sharing her entrepreneurial journey ✅ Rt Hon Bridget Phillipson MP – Secretary of State for Education, outlining how universities can support national economic goals Beyond the speeches, I had the privilege of discussing AI innovation, automation, and entrepreneurship with some amazing individuals. I also had the chance to conduct interviews and share insights on how technology and AI are shaping the future of business. 🔹 Representing Northumbria University As a Northumbria University supported startup, I was proud to represent my university at this prestigious event. I had a fantastic discussion with Professor Andy Long, FREng, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Northumbria University, about the critical role universities play in fostering innovation and supporting early-stage businesses. Northumbria continues to be a leader in driving entrepreneurship, and I’m incredibly grateful for their support in my journey. 📢 Takeaway: Universities aren’t just educational institutions – they are innovation powerhouses, incubating ideas that drive industries forward. As an entrepreneur, I’ve personally seen the impact of mentorship, funding, and academic collaboration in accelerating business success. 💬 What’s your experience? Have universities played a role in your professional journey? Whether as an entrepreneur, researcher, or business leader, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments! 👇 A massive thank you to Universities UK for this opportunity and to all the incredible individuals I connected with. Looking forward to continuing these conversations and building impactful collaborations! #HouseofLords #UniversitiesUK #AIInnovation #Entrepreneurship #UUKChancellorsReception #AyoobAI #NorthumbriaUniversity #WeAreNorthumbria

An exponential rise in the number of spin-outs and start-up companies from the University of Nottingham has underlined its vital role in driving innovation and economic growth, newly released figures reveal. The number of spin-out companies launched by the university has grown rapidly in the last ten years, compared to the previous decade, positioning Nottingham as a fertile breeding ground for invention and entrepreneurship. Between 2005 and 2015, eight spin-outs were launched, and in the decade that followed, 2015-25, this figure more than tripled, with 29 companies being added to the portfolio. This substantial increase in spin-out formation is evidence of a thriving eco-system for local growth and prosperity. Figures from Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) reveal that in addition to its spin-out companies, the university has a current portfolio of 36 staff start-ups, 135 student start-ups and seven social enterprises. Nottingham is also second in the UK for the turnover of its student start-ups, with its student ventures bringing in more than £400 million for the year 2022/23. The news coincides with a national campaign by Universities UK which shines a spotlight on the billions of pounds worth of local growth and investment resulting from higher-education support. Its campaign, Unis Start Up the UK, highlights how universities drive entrepreneurship across the nation, supporting new enterprises that boost growth, investment, and jobs. Nationally since 2015, universities have helped create 38,750 companies, with a 70% rise in active firms. Student start-up turnover grew by 757%, investment by 346%, and employment by 177%, reaching 64,384 jobs in 2022-23. Professor Tom Rodden, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange at the University of Nottingham, said: “We are supporting UUK’s Unis Start Up the UK campaign because it’s vitally important that the role of universities in supporting regional growth, providing a rich talent pool and supporting inward investment and job creation is recognised. “Through our expertise and know-how, combined with the world-class research that is synonymous with the University of Nottingham, we have established an eco-system that supports new start-ups and spin outs. Whatever the route to market, and be it led by students and staff or our commercial team, our entrepreneurial spirit and the drive to translate our research and innovation into tangible benefits for society are at the heart of everything we do.” Read more ➡️: https://ow.ly/4N2b50VlhWb #UnisStartUptheUK Cerca Magnetics Limited Neupulse
