What a special day! This week Soda launched our report on access to sport at UK House of Lords with the The Disability Policy Centre and Nimbusdisability. It was a great day, sponsored by John Bird the Founder of The Big Issue. The government’s new Minister of Social Security and Disability, Sir Stephen Timms MP spoke about the importance of inclusion across all aspects of life, and we heard from brilliant people from across the sports sector. Thank you Dr Kush Kanodia, Mary Fitzmeilton, Matt Lloyd PLY and Daniel Cook for joining me to share your work! On a personal note, after spending years in and out of the hospital across the river, it felt like a huge achievement and big moment to speak at the House of Lords! Excited to see what’s next, especially with the new government, to change access to sport across the UK. Pubs and stadiums not being accessible, poor communications and rife ableism still hold disabled people, and those with long-term health conditions back. I'm excited to share some of our amazing achievements through Soda's FIRST IMPACT REPORT https://lnkd.in/eh8DZ3tP, which we published in April this year! Looking back, since we started Soda, it's been an intense, at times tough, but brilliant ride! We've worked with the NHS to design new healthcare initiatives, with Disability Tech accelerator Remarkable Tech to support new founders to build inclusive and accessible solutions, with The Disability Policy Centre on accessibility of sport & fitness, alongside much more. We've been featured in government policy papers, and even won awards. Seeing the range of people we have engaged, supported and benefitted through our work is the reason we started it in the first place, and reading it all in one place makes me feel proud. From dementia choirs to community gardening groups, voluntary organisations and local groups play a vital role in supporting communities to live healthy and happy lives. As more and more people are connected with these activities through social prescribing, it's vital these groups are treated as equal partners in the process and funded accordingly. But what would this look like in practice? Last year Soda worked with Transformation Partners in Health and Care, NHS North East London and all seven Local Authorities within the region to explore this very question. We piloted new, more participatory grant funds designed to do two things: 1. Support closer collaboration between statutory and voluntary sector partners on health and wellbeing priorities 2. Direct funding to those community-based activities doing the most to support the health and wellbeing of local residents Running seven pilots at once was no mean feat but it gave us great insights into how these types of funds might best be designed to deliver on those core objectives, and what some of the barriers can be. Had an amazing day listening to small VCSFE and grass roots organisations pitching for community chest funding for social prescribing. It was a true participatory grant making process. Orgs listening, encouraging and voting for eachothers ideas . There were tears and cheers and some real raw personal stories shared on the day. Really inspiring. London Borough of Barking and Dagenham social prescribing team supported a VCSFE steering group (with members from Green shoes art, Thames life, Radiant ambitions,BDYD and tots tunes)and we have learned and improved during this process of true collaboration between the council and VCSFE more photos and stories here https://lnkd.in/eR2kyb9Q . .#communitychest #socialprescribing #partnershipsmatter Jagan John Emma Gillan
