At softenglish, we believe in the power of every individual’s journey. Today, we are honored to share a deeply moving testimonial from one of our exceptional students, S.Adams: “I was 69 when I heard about Ms. Daneilla and her method. I decided to give it a last chance and approached her. I am not a native speaker of English and I have severe dyslexia due to an injury and probably a brain damage. I am a very active person, a business man and a social activist. But reading English was a big challenge. I didn’t know the sounds of the letters. I found it very hard to recognize the letters and to pronounce their sounds in isolation let alone to blend them into words. I confuse the letters, I add sounds, I ignore letters… when I already know a word I can “read” it although it is not there… Oh, I am so dyslexic … even today after almost two years my reading is not fluent. But I am so happy with the method and with the results. This is the only method that succeeded in teaching me to read. All the extra techniques help me identify the patterns of reading and pronounce them. Thanks to the reading I now know some English. I can make sentences and express myself. I can read and understand although still slowly. Knowing English has been a dream for me and is now coming true. I can’t recommend the SoftRead method enough.” hashtag #Dyslexia #Dyslexiaawareness

What comes first, knowing the word or reading it? 🤔 Depends! on whether we are talking about L1 or L2. In the case of L1 - First Language, students first know the word and are familiar with it. In the case of L2 (Second Language), students should first be able to read the word (the technical skill) in order to familiarize themselves with it (abstract process), as well as to later practice to remember it. When dealing with L2, it is very important not to introduce a new word together with its visual representation if there are unfamiliar letters or reading patterns. By reading patterns, we mean all the letter combinations and effects the letters have on their neighboring letters; for example, pronunciation of the G’s, the C’s and the letter combination “ture” (as in picture). We have assembled the most popular patterns, turned them into rules, and built a comprehensive practice program to train the reader to identify and attach sounds to each of them. In one of our meetings, Susana Borrelli and I again discussed some issues regarding English as a foreign/second/additional language that is taught to SEND students. She told me that she loves the SoftEnglish program and explained that she uses it at school. I was proud and happy. But then I realized she uses it in parallel with the regular school curriculum. Why? because the students need to meet the curriculum requirements and submit their home assignments and past tests. Sure, this is what we all want, isn’t it… Consider the plight of a student with reading difficulties. How can we expect them to learn when they struggle with reading? The inability to read erects a barrier, a wall between the learner and the materials. This barrier not only hampers their visual understanding of the material but also impedes their comprehension. It's a challenge that needs our immediate attention. A struggling reader will find it challenging to connect with the language and the material and will also have difficulty with memorization. In fact, most memory challenges are linked to difficulties with reading. So, we want to solve the problem and facilitate the learning process. Reading is a learning tool, so we need to make sure the student can read. Then, all the walls will be removed, and all the gates will open. The way will be free for learning. We all know that learning should be scaffolded, but how on earth do we forget this, specifically here? Learning is not a forceful process. It's crucial to secure the learner's full cooperation. The learner should feel at ease and comfortable. We must reiterate the need for scaffolding and prioritizing the process. It's vital for students to be able to read before they are expected to keep up with their class level. This foundational skill paves the way for efficient learning. Once students can read, they are ready to learn, practice, take tests, and bridge the gap with fewer struggles and frustrations. And how about tests? The student is currently either failing or not fulfilling their full potential anyway, so it is more important to have them experience success rather than continue to be frustrated. We need to change our approach, change direction, and facilitate their learning to pave the way to success and experience success, which will encourage and motivate them to further learning challenges. By focusing solely on improving their reading skills with 15 to 20 dedicated lessons, we can minimize the learning gap quickly and set them on a completely different path. Good luck https://lnkd.in/eh7jw_xk
