🏭 The fashion sector must reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. Biomaterials can make this possible. ⬇️ 📈 In the past 20 years, fashion production has doubled, and it continues to grow. 🛢️ This massive expansion has been enabled by cheap synthetic fibres, mostly oil-derived polyester. ❗ The production of these fibres for the textile industry accounts for 1.35% of global oil consumption. 🇪🇸 This is greater than the annual oil consumption of the entire country of Spain. 🎯 If the production of synthetic fibres continues to grow, the climate commitments of fashion brands will be impossible to achieve. ⛔ Since less than 1% of clothes are recycled to make new garments, recycling can not solve this issue alone. 🟦 Science offers a solution. 🔬 Biomaterials can provide more sustainable alternatives for traditional synthetic fibres by: 📉 Reducing reliance on fossil fuels  📉 Lowering carbon emissions  📉 Minimising waste 🔵 At Solena Materials, our biomaterials platform allows us to design new proteins, which can be used to create fibres that are: 👕 High performance 🧵 Non-oil derived 🌀 By working with Solena Materials, fashion companies can become market leaders in sustainable textile innovation. 💬 Get in touch to help close fashion’s sustainability gaps with us: https://lnkd.in/eWg78RJe #SustainableFashion #SustainableTextiles #TextileIndustry #ApparelManufacturing #Fibres  #CircularFashion #Circularity #Biomaterials #Biotech

👕 Understanding the scope of plastic leakage: The fashion industry’s big environmental issue. 🌍 Estimates suggest the planetary boundary for chemical pollution, including plastics, has already been exceeded. ❗ The apparel industry contributes significantly to this, generating 14% of total plastic pollution from all sectors in 2019. 🌐 This is according to a new North Carolina State University study published in Nature Communications. 📖 The comprehensive study assesses plastic pollution from the global apparel industry over the complete apparel life cycle. 📊 It shows that synthetic apparel is by far the largest source of this waste, making up 89% of all plastic waste from the apparel industry. 🚮 This is dominated by the end-of-life textile itself due to mismanaged waste. 🌀 The study argues that a fundamental transformation of the apparel economy is needed to prevent ongoing plastic pollution. This will involve:  ♻️ A circular framework  🚛 Improving waste management for textiles 🧪 Decreased synthetic apparel consumption  ✅ Use of other readily available fibre options ⏩Read the paper for free online: https://lnkd.in/dvFmyXmx 🟦 At Solena Materials, we are committed to reducing the environmental impact of the fashion sector by creating the next generation of synthetic fibres. 🔬 We design new proteins to develop fibres that are high-performance and non-oil derived. ⏩ Learn more about our technology: https://lnkd.in/eGzvxNmN Authors Anna Kounina, Steven Pires, Jon Devine, Roland Geyer, Richard Venditti, Sophie Chalumeau (she/her), Shreya Sonar and Julien B. 🔵 3 challenges new innovations need to overcome to scale their sustainable solutions in the fashion sector ⬇️ 🏭 The textile industry emits 2-8% of the world’s greenhouse gases and is responsible for 9% of ocean microplastic pollution. 🔬 The development of innovative new materials can help solve the industry's sustainability problems. ⬇️ To do this, innovators must tackle 3 core challenges: 1️⃣ Cost requirements 2️⃣ Performance requirements 3️⃣ Supply chain barriers to implementing new materials 💬 As demonstrated in a seminar talk at The Sustainable Angle's Future Fabrics Expo, many groundbreaking companies are already addressing these challenges. 🔹 At Solena Materials, we design new proteins to develop fibres that are high-performance and non-oil derived. 🌀 However, the 2 most important factors that remain vital to scaling are: ➡️ Investment and patience. 🧵 New materials can’t be expected to be optimised and commercialised with a fraction of the budget and time that was afforded to plastic-based products. ℹ️ The lesson: Invest now and wait for the industry to inevitably catch up. ⏩ Reach out to work with us on our mission to reduce the environmental impact of the fashion sector: https://lnkd.in/eWg78RJe  These topics were discussed in detail on the panel 'Innovations: reimagining our relationship with both materiality and manufacturing' with Christine Goulay, Maria Intscher-Owrang, Mira N., Victoria M. and Dali Naeb. #SustainableFashion #SustainableTextiles #TextileIndustry #FutureFabrics #NextGeneration #MaterialsRevolution #SustainableSourcing #LCAW24 #NextGenSolution
