The South African Chamber of Commerce UK is deeply saddened by the passing of former Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan and the man that transformed the tax revenue landscape and culture. He was an unwavering and courageous figure, a part of the brave group of leaders who worked tirelessly to reduce the damage that was happening, trying to keep South Africa on course during some of the country’s most challenging periods. Gordhan’s dedication to service to the country, and his integrity were evident throughout his life and career. His leadership at SARS turned the institution into one of the most effective public enterprises in our history. As Finance Minister, he upheld fiscal stability and integrity despite immense challenges, earning widespread international respect. His guidance of our public enterprises since the times of the state capture crisis is starting to bear fruit today. Those who had the privilege of knowing him will remember his humility and exceptional intellect. We join fellow South Africans and the global community in paying tribute to him. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues. It is a shock and unfair that after more than 50 years, he gains only a few months of retirement and time with his family. Changes in SA Chamber UK leadership The South African Chamber of Commerce UK Limited announced changes in its leadership team at its AGM on 22nd August 2024. Sharon Constançon, the Executive Chairman, a governance professional in her own business, Genius Boards, has always stated she would step down at 9 years, being best practice guidance and understanding the value of “refresh” of the Board. Sadly for all, that date, in December 2024, is looming. The Chamber has worked on its succession plan and the team decided to engage a hand over period. The handover process began with the announcement last night at the AGM and will begin with immediate effect. Changes Dennis Zietsman, the Deputy Chairman, who has been on the Board for 6 years, will step up to being the Chairman of the Board. Svend Littauer, an Exco member for 7 years, will step up to the role of CEO. Andrew Skipper, Director of the Board, will be the Chair of the Steering Committing until the end of the handover period in December. Mohamed Cassimjee, just retired Board Director, has been appointed to the Advisory Board. Moses Tembe, retired Director, has been appointed to the Advisory Board. Tanya Cohen, retired Director, has been appointed to the Advisory Board. Sharon Constançon gave a personal thank you to her team and the Board stating this was a strange moment, relief that a good succession plan had been formulated and knowing “that the Chamber is in the safe hands of now Chairman and CEO who know the Chamber well and will naturally build upon the work so far”, and on the other side, it is sad to see a chapter closing. Sharon retires from the Board on 6th December 2024. Dennis Zietsman who has worked closely with Sharon for the past six years, thanked “Sharon for her commitment, loyalty and tireless innovation and leadership”. Dennis committed to lead professionally, and give the energy, time, commitment and positivity the Chamber is used to. Dennis is founder of Servest in South Africa and took the business international, Dennis stated that he is “looking forward to seeing the work to date being built upon by the various teams and leading the Chamber in its next chapter of success, making special reference to building further partnerships.” Svend Littauer is founder of Entreprenor, a business services group servicing UK and SA markets and has been a member on several Chamber Committees and worked with other international chambers before. Svend stated to members at the AGM that “I am committed to fostering stronger ties between South Africa and the UK and supporting businesses in their international endeavours”.
