Making South Yorkshire safer and stronger

About us

Our mission is 'Making South Yorkshire safer and stronger' and our work to achieve this extends to far more than fighting fires. Our firefighters respond to a wide range of emergencies including road traffic collisions, water rescues and many other types of ‘special service’ incidents. However, whilst our work responding to 999 calls is both well known and well valued by the public, far more of our contact with local people is actually through our varied and extensive work to prevent incidents from happening in the first place. To deliver this work, we employ more than 600 people, most of whom are firefighters. The majority of these are wholetime firefighters, which means they are available to attend emergency incidents 24 hours a day. We also employ on-call firefighters at some of our fire stations. Our firefighters are supported by teams of support staff who are skilled to provide a wide range of specialist services. This includes our community safety work and our responsibilities to enforce business fire safety laws. We also work with a network of volunteers to further extend the reach of our prevention work.

  • Shout out to our fire officer Gary, who is sleeping outside every night in March to raise money for homeless veterans. 25 nights down- 6 more to go! A South Yorkshire fire officer will sleep outside every night in March in a bid to raise money for homeless veterans. Gary Devonport is taking part in The Great Tommy Sleep Out a bid to help an estimated 4,000 homeless veterans in London alone. Although the @royalbritishlegion Industries organised campaign calls on people to spend just one night under the stars, Gary says his own experiences supporting the armed forces community spurred him on to take the challenge further. Gary said: “I’m swapping my bed for a sleeping bag for a whole month to raise vital funds and awareness for veterans who are experiencing homelessness in the UK right now. With every penny raised, Royal British Legion Industries can provide safe, warm housing and ensure everyone has a fair opportunity to gain employment, regardless of health conditions or disability. “I’m a veteran himself- having served for four years as an infantryman in the Duke of Wellingtons and one year in the Yorkshire regiment. I now chair South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue’s Armed Forces Network, which supports an estimated 10% of our workforce who are members of the armed forces community. We’re often raising money for military charities and this was a challenge I’ve been really motivated to have a go at.” New research from Royal British Legion Industries found that the proportion of veterans among London's single homeless population has decreased from over 20% in the 1990s to 6% in 2008. This reduction is attributed to improved Ministry of Defence (MoD) resettlement provisions and better interventions from ex-Service charities. But homeless veterans tend to be older, have slept rough for longer and are more likely to have alcohol-related problems compared to the wider homeless population. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is also present among some homeless veterans. To sponsor Gary, you can visit his fundraising page here: https://lnkd.in/eUxuQ_rm
