A World of Possibilities

About us

Southfield School for Girls opened in 1976, after the amalgamation of Kettering High School for Girls and Rockingham Road Senior Girls School. It is one of two girls’ schools in Northamptonshire. In 1988 the Local Authority declared its intention to close Southfield. Fortunately, however, this decision coincided, with a new government policy to allow schools to become independent while staying within the state system, known as Grant Maintained Status. This status was granted on 1 April 1990 and Southfield was one of the first GM schools in the country. In 1999, there was a quiet transition to become a foundation school which put us back in touch with the Local Authority. In 2004, the school achieved Sports College status, followed in 2009 with Science as the school’s second specialism. In the same year we became accredited as a centre for Gifted and Talented students. After a successful fundraising campaign, Southfield opened a four-court sports hall and state of the art dance studio which have become thriving facilities in the greater Kettering community. After discussion and consultation the Governing Body decided to apply for Academy status which was achieved in August 2012. During 2013, we played a part in the celebration of Kettering High School’s 100 year history, whose ethos of educating girls in the Kettering area we continue today. #AWorldOfPossibilities

  • Southfield School students have been celebrating their GCSE results.   Southfield School is proud to recognise the hard work and perseverance of our Year 11 students as they receive their GCSE and vocational results. In the context of national standards returning to those seen in 2019 we are exceptionally proud of the achievements of all our students which have paved the way for them to pursue further studies, apprenticeships, and other future endeavours.   Headteacher, Scott Nevett, remarked; “We are extremely proud of this year group’s achievements, given the many challenges they have faced during their secondary school career. Both students and staff at the school have worked incredibly hard to achieve the successes we have seen today and we would like to thank parents/carers for their invaluable support throughout. We were delighted to welcome back the majority of our students into our sixth form and wish those moving onto a new destination all the best for the future.” Southfield School’s outstanding sixth form continues to offer an excellent environment for learning, with state-of-the-art facilities including a café, lecture theatre, and various social and study spaces. There are still spaces available, and we encourage interested external students to contact us at admissions@southfieldsch.co.uk

  • Southfield School Celebrates Outstanding A Level and Vocational Qualification Results in 2024 Southfield School wants to congratulate the 2024 leavers on their excellent and hard-fought set of A Level and vocational results, which come on the back of a great deal of hard work and dedication from students and staff, alongside the invaluable support and encouragement from parents/carers. Our students have shown remarkable resilience and adaptability during this crucial stage of their school career. We are thrilled that the grades our students have achieved have enabled the overwhelming majority to progress to their first choice of post-18 destinations, including university, apprenticeships and employment. We are particularly proud that several of our students have attained the highest grades at A Level and will be pursuing their chosen subjects, notably in law and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), at some of the leading universities in the country and even as far as the USA. Equally, we celebrate those students who have exceeded their expectations and are now moving on to their chosen next steps. Headteacher, Scott Nevett, commented; "Our students and staff have worked tirelessly over the past two years, enabling this cohort to achieve a great set of results and access to their chosen destinations. This hard work, determination and positive approach to learning are deserving of celebration and reflect our ‘Outstanding’ OFSTED judgement for our sixth form. We wish all of our students every success as they embark on new challenges and look forward to hearing of their future endeavours."

  • Pupils at Southfield School have once again been awarded a prestigious Eco-Schools’ Green Flag. This academic year, students at Southfield School have once again received international accreditation for their exceptional work in promoting sustainability and raising environmental awareness amongst their peers. The Eco-Schools programme, established in 1994, is now implemented in over 70 countries worldwide. In 2023-24, more than 1.4 million pupils attended an Eco-School in England. The programme follows a tried-and-trusted seven-step framework, that encourages young people to explore a variety of environmental issues before spearheading environmental action in their school and local community. Since Southfield School first engaged with the Eco-Schools’ programme, accomplishments have included developing wildlife habitats on the school site, running a second-hand clothes sale and developing a school pond. This year, pupils impressively built on these achievements by planting trees on site, signing-up to and promoting the HomeRun sustainable travel app, and further developing wildlife habitats with the addition of hedgehog homes, bat boxes and insect homes around the site (thanks to funding from Kettering Town Council). Speaking about their achievements staff member Dr Fordham said, ‘students have put in so much effort with creating these exciting projects for the benefit of the environment’. And pupil, Christabel (Year 7) stated, ‘Eco Club is also about working together as a team to save our environment. Since being in Southfield School Eco Club I have learnt that making small changes can have a big impact on society.’ Eco-Schools England Manager, Adam Flint, said: ‘The Eco-Schools’ Green Flag is an international benchmark that demonstrates a commitment to fighting climate change and high standard of sustainable practice. Students and staff who earn this award deserve recognition for their dedication toward protecting our planet. Every day, they demonstrate that each of us can contribute to making our planet a better, more sustainable, place.’ To learn more about Eco-Schools head to www.eco-schools.org.uk #AWorldOfPossibilities

  • Lord Award Presentation Peter Lord came in to school today to present the Lord Award for Art, Craft and Design to our prize winner, Year 13 student Olivia Tilley. Olivia has embraced the creative process throughout her A level studies and produced successful outcomes from a number of specialism such as textiles, painting, photography and sculpture. She drew inspiration from a range of environmental and domestic issues and her artworks reflect the world around us. The Lord Award was established by the late Merle Lord, former Chair of Governors for the school, and designed by her husband Peter Lord, who we were honoured to invite to present the award in Merle’s memory and to celebrate artistic and creative talent in our school. #AWorldOfPossibilities
