Pupils at Southfield School have once again been awarded a prestigious Eco-Schools’ Green Flag. This academic year, students at Southfield School have once again received international accreditation for their exceptional work in promoting sustainability and raising environmental awareness amongst their peers. The Eco-Schools programme, established in 1994, is now implemented in over 70 countries worldwide. In 2023-24, more than 1.4 million pupils attended an Eco-School in England. The programme follows a tried-and-trusted seven-step framework, that encourages young people to explore a variety of environmental issues before spearheading environmental action in their school and local community. Since Southfield School first engaged with the Eco-Schools’ programme, accomplishments have included developing wildlife habitats on the school site, running a second-hand clothes sale and developing a school pond. This year, pupils impressively built on these achievements by planting trees on site, signing-up to and promoting the HomeRun sustainable travel app, and further developing wildlife habitats with the addition of hedgehog homes, bat boxes and insect homes around the site (thanks to funding from Kettering Town Council). Speaking about their achievements staff member Dr Fordham said, ‘students have put in so much effort with creating these exciting projects for the benefit of the environment’. And pupil, Christabel (Year 7) stated, ‘Eco Club is also about working together as a team to save our environment. Since being in Southfield School Eco Club I have learnt that making small changes can have a big impact on society.’ Eco-Schools England Manager, Adam Flint, said: ‘The Eco-Schools’ Green Flag is an international benchmark that demonstrates a commitment to fighting climate change and high standard of sustainable practice. Students and staff who earn this award deserve recognition for their dedication toward protecting our planet. Every day, they demonstrate that each of us can contribute to making our planet a better, more sustainable, place.’ To learn more about Eco-Schools head to www.eco-schools.org.uk #AWorldOfPossibilities

How do you see the #skill of #systemthinking or making connections? The article captures the demonstration of skill perfectly. Systems thinking is a way of making sense of the complexity of the world by looking at it in terms of wholes and relationships rather than by splitting it down into its parts. Callum, a student at Ynysddu Primary School, Wales enthusiastically shared his school's air quality monitoring project, saying: "We do this by looking at the types of lichen growing on different surfaces. For example, areas with more nitrogen-loving lichen, like the kind we found near the rugby club car park, show poorer air quality from car fumes. That's why we're encouraging people to turn their engines off completely when parked – it can make a real difference!" The above is also a great example of how we can take action using biodiversity as an indicator of a health ecosystem. I feel so proud of the impact we are creating at Foundation for Environmental Education. In the last 30 years, Eco-Schools has become the world's largest environmental education programme. It currently engages 19.5 million students from 97 countries. https://lnkd.in/dB2QYbJJ #GreeningEducation #GenerationRestoration #ESD Foundation for Environmental Education UNESCO UNICEF Lee Wray-Davies Olivia Copsey Reeza Hanselmann Owen Derbyshire Lan Yu Tan

📢 Staff and students at Coleg y Cymoedd help plant 26,000 trees in as little as ten months! 🌳 In April 2023, Coleg y Cymoedd became the first FE college in Wales to adopt Ecosia, an eco-friendly browser that plants a tree, every time someone uses it to conduct an online search. The move followed the appointment of Rachel Edmonds-Naish, the first to be given the role of Assistant Principal for Sustainable Futures in Wales. 💬 At the time, Rachel said: “With over 9,000 staff and learners at Coleg y Cymoedd, small changes have the potential to make a huge difference in tackling climate change. “Setting Ecosia as the default search engine at the college is a simple change – one that costs nothing but one that will have a real impact for the environment. It’s an easy, everyday action that can get learners thinking.” As of 1st February 2024, Ecosia reported that Coleg y Cymoedd staff and students have used their browser to search the web over 1.2 million times, financing the planting of almost 26,000 trees. 👏 ➡️ Read more: https://lnkd.in/dMgWYufd #Sustainability #ClimateChange

Schools across the #UK are engaging in 29 days of fun, impactful and educational environmental activities. Here’s what you need to know. Running from 7th June to 5th July 2024, Climate Action Countdown is a month of collaborative and informative events and happenings aimed at inspiring young people to support global #ecosystems, #netzero #transition, and other ‘green’ agendas. In total, 30 climate charities are involved in the campaign, which forms part of the Let’s Go Zero initiative to make all schools #carbonneutral bu 2030. Uniform swaps, spotlights on green careers, vertical gardening, constructing bug and bird houses, petitioning, sustainability bingo, active travel mini-advenures and more are all part of the initiative. Schools are being encouraged to take part even if just for a small window of the full month, with a year or whole-of-community assembly seen as the best way to brainstorm ideas with pupils and explain how and when events will work. ‘All the activities are fun and it’s a really eclectic pick-and-mix range of things to do – from singing to writing manifestos,’ said Alex Green, Head of Let’s Go Zero. ‘You can take part as a whole school, or do the activities as a class, eco-club, or individual student. catering teams, caretakers and other staff can also help their school get involved. ‘And we’d love home schoolers to join us too. By doing these fun and engaging activities, schools can take the first steps on their journey to being zero carbon,’ he contined. ‘We know that the Countdown will inspire even more schools to be part of the growing Let’s Go Zero campaign, working to help all #UK schools be zero carbon by 2030.’ A range of resources have been created to help teachers and support staff with their own Climate Action Countdown. This included ‘eco-anxiety’ guidance on how to talk about #climatechange and make students feel more confident and empowered about their future, without watering down the facts. Activity packs, music video files, posters, quizzes, worksheets, a daily ‘inspiration calendar’ and more are all available for free here. ‘The Climate Action Countdown is an outstanding opportunity for our school communities to come together and show leadership in the fight to reduce carbon emissions and act positively on the government’s climate change strategy for education,’ said Lee Hughes, Chief Operating Officer from Peterborough Diocese Education Trust. ‘As a Multi Academy Trust of 33 #ChurchofEngland primary schools, we aspire to act now, engaging our staff, children and communities to make #sustainable changes,’ he continued. ‘No action is too small, and we want to encourage our schools to embrace the climate challenge and show that positive steps can be taken, even with really old estates! We will be asking our schools to join together this summer and working with our partners, the Let’s Go Zero coalition, to engage with the Climate Action Countdown.’

From Classroom to Conservation: A Teacher's Inspiring Journey 🐦📦 When the world slowed down during lockdown, one primary school teacher in the Scottish Borders saw an opportunity to make a difference. Tom Rawson began crafting bird boxes, and what started as a small project has blossomed into a nationwide initiative. Over 5,500 bird boxes later, Tom's creations have found homes in schools across Scotland, from the Borders to the Highlands, and now in the Kingdom of Fife. But these aren't just ordinary bird boxes – they're gateways to learning and conservation. Here's why this project is so impactful: 1. Hands-on Learning: Students become citizen scientists, observing and recording bird activity. 2. Biodiversity Boost: Each box supports various species for 15-20 years. 3. Connecting with Nature: Urban schools gain a slice of wildlife on their doorstep. 4. Sustainable Manufacturing: All boxes are made with eco-friendly materials. 5. Nationwide Reach: Tom aims to bring boxes to every school in Scotland. As Tom puts it, "Allowing children to have the knowledge to be able to access the world around them is really important." This initiative reminds us that small actions can have a big impact. Whether you're an educator, a nature enthusiast, or simply someone looking to make a difference, there's always a way to contribute to our local ecosystems. What small step could you take today to connect with nature or support your local wildlife? #WildlifeConservation #EducationInnovation #ScottishNature #SustainabilityInSchools Feeling inspired to make a difference in your community?
