Today is International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and we’re highlighting an often-hidden issue: bed poverty. In Sheffield, 1 in 10 children left hospital without a safe space to sleep in 2023. No child should face this reality. That’s why South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard has teamed up with Baby Basics UK to deliver the £2.2m Beds for Babies, a Safe Space to Sleep project. Together, we’re tackling bed poverty for children aged 0-5 across South Yorkshire, ensuring every child has the safe, secure space they deserve.

In South Yorkshire we’re working together and differently to address the healthcare challenges that we face 🩺 People in South Yorkshire have higher rates of early and preventable deaths from cancer than other parts of the country, and we know that finding cancer early can be a life saver. South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard visited a new South Yorkshire programme to improve access to lung screening for cancer in communities with a high need. Since the screening programme first started, 511 cancers have been detected, mostly at stage one or two. The success of the programme in South Yorkshire means it will roll out nationally from 2029. Supertram Gets a Super Clean! Since bringing our trams back into public ownership earlier this year, the Supertram team has been hard at work creating a cleaner network and making journeys more pleasant. And South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard met with staff at Supertram’s Nunnery depot to personally thank them for all their brilliant work cleaning the trams and stops. 🚊 a deep clean programme is being rolled out on all trams and they now benefit from a nightly cleaning routine 🚊 tram stops get daily checks, monthly deep cleans, and regular litter removal along the tracks 🚊 old and worn seat covers continue to be replaced This is just the beginning of our commitment to create a world-class transport network for South Yorkshire—connecting our communities to new opportunities every day.
