Thank you Kathryn Ferry! Our members-only magazine should be dropping on doorsteps now! Want to get next quarter's issue? https://lnkd.in/dKiYENF
In their spring magazine SPAB celebrate women in conservation, past and present. The early membership lists are fascinating so I was pleased to have the opportunity to share the biographies of a few pioneering women members in an article co-written with Tessa Wild.

The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) is dismayed to learn of the Government's intention to remove the Gardens Trust's status as a statutory consultee within the English planning system. Their constructive advice on the UK’s world-famous parks and gardens helps protect our precious historic landscapes, as well as supporting positive economic growth and healthy cohesive societies. We urge the department to reconsider this move.
📢 We’re dismayed to learn that the government intends to consider removing us as a statutory consultee within the English planning system. We are passionate about the role that the UK’s world-famous historic #parks and #gardens can play in supporting positive economic growth and healthy cohesive societies, and eager to continue helping this in our role as statutory consultee. 📰 Read our full statement on our website: https://lnkd.in/e5Y7nZTH #planning #government #statutoryconsultee #historicparks #historicgardens #designedlandscapes

SPAB reposted this
SPAB's planning casework https://lnkd.in/eSFwKbGd has been central to its mission since its foundation almost 150 years ago. The basement of SPAB's HQ contains a wonderfully rich archive of many thousands of cases that staff and volunteers have commented on. The records have been well curated but occasionally there are tantalising gaps, as in this case in Evesham. There are a series of photos from circa 1890 of the town centre. This one showing the corner of the Market Place with the C16/17 Red Lion pub in front of the Abbey Bell Tower (1524-32) and the parapet spire of All Saints C15/16. I can find no record of casework relating to this part of Evesham in the 1890s but the 1908 the Public Library https://lnkd.in/eBtYiSdr by Evesham architect G H Hunt appears to have been extended by an extra bay at some point to swallow up an attractive C17 building. Evesham, as well as other parts of Worcestershire and adjacent counties seem to have had a particular interest to early SPAB activists, I suspect because of the high rate of survival of very good quality stone and timber-framed buildings. The growing public awareness and appreciation of the importance of our heritage that SPAB, learned archaeological and historical societies and a growing band of heritage enthusiasts helped foster a more positive attitude to the tangible fabric of the UK's past than in many other countries, and while the serious losses we see now are nothing like as frequent as they were in SPAB's early days, the continued casework of SPAB and many other heritage organisations, demonstrates that we all must remain vigilant. It is not about stopping change but more about appreciating the glories of what as a society we have inherited, and making sure changes to our building stock are sympathetic and minimise harm. Another brilliant talk from SPAB Scholar Sarika Jhawar. What a venue!
It was a pleasure to discuss the SPAB scholarship at newly opened Humayun’s Tomb Museum in New Delhi, a truly remarkable venue that highlights the history of this iconic site along with the intricate and exquisite crafts that define Mughal architecture. Reflecting on my SPAB scholarship experience is always enriching—it allows me to relive an extraordinary journey. During the program, I was struck by the diversity within architectural conservation, from addressing varied building types to tackling unique challenges. The projects we encountered spanned a diverse range, from humble barns to grand cathedrals, encompassing a wide array of architectural styles. Notably unique projects such as the World War II training dome in Ireland and the conservation of a historic ship in Scotland demonstrate the wide variety of projects one can expect to see during the scholarship. Hands-on practical work on the other hand provides immersive and experiential learning of the various building crafts. This talk was first of the ‘Conversations in Conservation’ series organised by Aga Khan Trust for Culture in New Delhi. #spab #architecturalconservation

Thanks Reyhaneh Babaei for reviewing Hugh Conway Morris's talk. Another brilliant session from a SPAB Scholar. Interested in the Scholarship or Fellowship - find out more on our website: https://lnkd.in/gN_aega https://lnkd.in/d6sGBKU
Architecture Made Manifest by Landscape I attended an awesome lunch talk at UCL Bartlett, where oak framer and architect Hugh Conway Morris from Manifest Design Workshop Ltd shared his expertise on heritage buildings, timber craftsmanship, and sustainable design. He highlighted how architecture functioned before cheap energy and how reviving historical techniques can help us build a more sustainable future. A key takeaway: if we don’t truly know our environment, we can’t design for it. Every building is shaped by its surroundings, and using local materials wisely can transform the future of architecture. Also, a fascinating talk by Catherine Bull on the SPAB Scholarship, a hands-on, 9-month journey into conservation, craftsmanship, and heritage. A truly inspiring evening!
