It’s hard to imagine now, but the beautiful Grade II* listed Handforth Hall, Cheshire, was once boarded up and even faced a demolition threat. Historic Buildings & Places, alongside others, strongly opposed its demolition. Ultimately, it was the market that came to the rescue – the Hall was purchased, saving it from destruction. Today, it stands proudly restored. Built in 1562, Handforth Hall is a stunning example of the Black and White timber-framed tradition, rich in history and architectural beauty. #LookUp #HeritageMatters #HumbleHeritage #HistoricArchitecture #HistoricHomes #HandforthHall #Cheshire #TimberFraming #16thCentury #EnglishCountryside #HiddenGem #ArchitectureLovers #TopiaryGarden #HistoricBuildings

The Grade I Church of St Mary the Virgin, Throwleigh, is a beautiful example of medieval craftsmanship, with origins dating back to the 13th century. Rebuilt primarily in the 15th and 16th centuries, its granite ashlar walls, Perpendicular windows, and intricate details reflect the devotion and skill of its creators. Highlights include a C15 wagon roof adorned with carved bosses, an ornate priest’s doorway with stylised fern carvings, and a unique Easter Sepulchre in the chancel. Its C15 font and fragments of a 1544 screen connect us to centuries of worship and community life. With its rich history and design, St Mary’s is a treasure in Devon’s enduring heritage. #EverydayHeritage #StMaryTheVirgin #MedievalChurch #GradeIListed #HistoricDevon #ChurchArchitecture #Dartmoor #HeritageConservation

Perched above the village of Thorpeness, Suffolk, the House in the Clouds is a whimsical landmark with a fascinating history. Built in 1923 as a water tower to complement the village’s aesthetic, it was transformed into a house in 1979 when the water tank was removed. Its unique design earned it Grade II listed status.
